Finally saw it today and thought it was fantastic. Won’t do a review but few observations particularly after skimming this thread
I think the way Oppenheimer is portrayed is excellent. A man who clearly has ambitions so is excited to lead the Manhattan project and achieve success from both a career and scientific standpoint but also someone who clearly struggled with the morality of the atomic bomb. And I think there’s an element that no one seemed to fully understand the true Oppenheimer and his feelings in full, so Nolan inserted that ambiguity. And here in 2023, we have to remember particularly during total war, there’s clear ambiguity of character. Most of these scientists were socialists tasked with creating a bomb
I also think the third act was important and needed to be there to show the Govt didn’t really give a fukk about these scientists. This was already shown when Oppenheimer wanted to be in the circle for the actual bombing and army was basically like ‘we’ll take it from here. Your job is done’. And I think that’s the importance to the story of have his security clearance taken away. Oppenheimer felt like he was that guy. Then all of a sudden shyt moves on. You can be the ‘Father of the atomic bomb’ but if someone wants to fukk you over like Strauss or you dabbled in communism, you can still have your legacy and career damaged/ curtailed. The US doesn’t feel like it owes you anything. Your just another breh who contributed to the war effort but now your fukking up our post war plans
