Panel of F-16, F-18, F-22 Raptor and 5 Gen pilots reviewing the movie. Basically, they all loved it. Starts around 6:10:

What was cool was seeing them talk about ego for pilots and you can see how so many of these guys are real humble and down to earth.

Like when they asked if unmanned fighters would be the future and fighter pilots would be a thing of the past and they pretty much said "Not this generation because it's confirmed the 6th gens are manned, but wouldn't be surprised if the generation afterwards was 100% unmanned."

Just keep it real honest and humble which I guess you gotta be to be in the profession.

humble, approachable and credible are the ethos of the Fighter Weapons Schools (TOPGUN) and of the USAF's Version called Weapons Instructor Course (WIC).

These grads, (we refer to as Patches named for the patch all grads wear in their daily duty uniform) have to have a very transparent thought process and are extremely critical during and after operations. Especially in post operations briefs called Debriefs. In ops career fields, Debriefs are known to be long, grueling yet intense as every mistake youve made is pointed out and drilled down to understand why it happen, and what will be done to ensure it doesnt happen again.

Yeah, I'd imagine you'd have to give an honest, professional take on the matter because your intel is responsible for your life and someone else's.

Honest feedback also is what leads to improvements, troubleshooting and innovations.

Many people don't like to give that kind of feedback because their ego's may take a hit by admitting their shortcomings, but they must do so to save someone else's life. Overtime if they're not that way already I'm sure that leads to people to eventually pulling their guard down and be very straightforward and like you mention, credible, to the point that is now part of their natural personality.

I get what you're saying, but how would you have done a Top Gun sequel and changed it significantly? Make Connelly Angela Bassett instead (which would again add to the "propping up whitey" vibe you're talking about? Make Jon Hamm's character black instead of Warlock (which would be seen as some hating ass negro lmao!)? Rooster couldn't be black. So, what? I think they did a pretty good job with racial diversity here.
Honestly, it wasn't terrible. It was nice seeing that much color in a big blockbuster. I liked Hondu a lot. I think I would have given Coyote or Payback a little more depth and a few more lines so they made more of an impact. Overall, I think a little more character development for the recruits would have made it a perfect movie.

It's not a fixed story. They can do whatever they want.

1. give Tom a black romantic interest who inspires him and runs that bar.
2. make Hangman black
3. make the best oif the young pilots black. he is cocky like cruise was. he makes that run in 2mins after cruise helped him access the plane. he makes the final kill missile shot and gets the accolades at the end. rooster sub-plot remains the same.
4. make Hamm black instead
5. adjust the hero shots away from the gringos and more on the brehs.

etc ... .

Right. But if you check out the reviews and fan boards, people still gravitate to white side characters who are given lots of personality. Characters like Bob and Hangman are side characters, yet they are written in a way that has more depth and humanity that sticks with people. I mean I'm not the only one who has noticed this. Fine, we're not the leads, but even when we're side characters, we're kinda 1-dimensional and inconsequential. I'm not here to debate this, it's honestly just an observation because as a writer, I just can't help but notice how we're written or should I say underwritten, even as side characters. It's almost like we're just props.

you are right. it's everywhere in Hollywood. Even in Black Panther.

But the film wasn't "just" about TC. It was about his chick, Rooster, Ice Man, fighter jets, stunts, getting older and imperial gringo-ness as well.

I understand what your saying and would agree with you if this were a serious drama film. But like most action movies people go to see the headliners. Same reason people went to see terminator 2. People didn’t care about the chick or the kid, people wanted to see Arnold. Same as top gun and mission impossible People go to see tom cruise do crazy stunts. Every other character is just supplementary. Even rooster who was the most prominent side character was still supplementary to Maverick

I am not talking about what people "saw". I said what the film was about. And the things I listed are the main themes in the story.
Feel free to correct my list.

There are subtexts but it’s a fukking Hollywood action film man. They don’t go deeper than surface level on that stuff

Only with dense skulls. Ideas just bounce right off 'em.

Generally main themes sink in. Especially with well made powerful movies.

I am not going to link anything about the power of film.

I am not going to link anything about the power of propaganda. In particular how subtext and subversion play roles in effective propaganda.

I am not going to link anything about the US Govt's historic collaboration with Hollywood.

I am not going to link anything about Air Force/Navy applications being influenced by Hollywood films.

well .. How Top Gun Impacted Navy Recruiting In Real Life

this was an insanely white movie. which is crazy because there were multiple black/latino people in it. :mjlol:

i don't know how they managed that, but that ending was nice. I knew hangman was gonna get a redemption moment.

I'm glad it wasn't a diversity for diversity's sake movie. They had four Black men involved with the mission and a woman. No one felt shoehorned in like we've seen in other films and television recently. Looking at you Star Wars.
