Yeah I've seen this movie 3 times now, and this has been on my mind every time but I didn't want to say anything because people accuse you of overreacting, so I'm glad you said it. There were so many black faces in this movie, but it really does uplift white men. That first scene especially when they zero in on each black person in the control room is so over the top with it. I think that's the new way of doing diversity in Hollywood. Black folks are there to legitimate the white lead's authority.
" He's the fastest man alive" :mjpls:. That line reminded me of Sam Wilson saying "Don't look at me, I can do everything he can, just slower. "

It's kinda frustrating that no matter how many black faces there are in these movies, they're nothing but props for white heroes. I guess we should be happy that at least Payback got chosen for the mission.:heh:
It’s a tom cruise movie why wouldn’t he be the fukking lead?:aicmon:

Yeah, I get it, man. I get it. It's just the cumulative effect of watching movies. I see like 3-4 movies a week and I'm just starting to notice a trend when it comes to "diversity". Blacks are always there, in the background, barely speaking or when they do speak it's to hype the white lead up. It just gets old. In this movie it's particularly noticeable because they zero in on like 5 black people in the control room lol. It's just an observation.

Every action movie is going to have the lead or protagonist nearly invincible and better than the supporting cast that’s just how it is. Most leads in Hollywood are white

Right. But if you check out the reviews and fan boards, people still gravitate to white side characters who are given lots of personality. Characters like Bob and Hangman are side characters, yet they are written in a way that has more depth and humanity that sticks with people. I mean I'm not the only one who has noticed this. Fine, we're not the leads, but even when we're side characters, we're kinda 1-dimensional and inconsequential. I'm not here to debate this, it's honestly just an observation because as a writer, I just can't help but notice how we're written or should I say underwritten, even as side characters. It's almost like we're just props.

this was an insanely white movie. which is crazy because there were multiple black/latino people in it. :mjlol:

i don't know how they managed that, but that ending was nice. I knew hangman was gonna get a redemption moment.
unfortunately, flying ops in the Navy and Air force are also extremely white. And fighters are even whiter than that.

Pilots tend to be very smart, well educated and in as good of shape as you can be. All metrics tied in with growing up in a fair amount of privilege.

The whole movie is a vehicle for Tom Cruise and it needs to be that. He's the last true Hollywood lead... Dwayne can put some asses in seats too but nobody has the old Hollywood clout as Tom does.

Yeah, I know. You're right. See, but in a movie where they are testing jets at Mach 10 (ridiculous) and pulling down 9+ Gs to climb out of a mission (also ridiculous), making sure the Navy's white pilots are accurately represented seems shady.

I get what you're saying, but how would you have done a Top Gun sequel and changed it significantly? Make Connelly Angela Bassett instead (which would again add to the "propping up whitey" vibe you're talking about? Make Jon Hamm's character black instead of Warlock (which would be seen as some hating ass negro lmao!)? Rooster couldn't be black. So, what? I think they did a pretty good job with racial diversity here.
