thing is these other handhelds aren't gonna have the ease of use of the Steam Deck. Valve has put in a lot of work into their controller, OS, and getting games compatible with it. now even devs are going out their way to make their games Steam Deck Verified

these other handheld PC's are gonna take more work to get shyt working right

is the 64gb version enough? :lupe:

I got the 64gb, and it really depends. If you got like indie titles, using emulators, or planning to play like one big game on the jawn, its efficient. Now if I were you, I would get a micro sd or upgrade it manually which is ten times cheaper than the 512 version:

How does the SteamDeck stack up to modern PC builds and can you play modded games on it?

I would be pretty interested in one of these if the performance was up to par and I could dock it to my TV

Modding will depend on the game. Some mods don’t have good Linux support so you might have to hack around it/boot from windows somehow. So far I’ve been able to mod all the games I’m interested in with no issues.

Performance wise I find it’s not up to par with my PC and I wouldn’t exactly consider my PC top end. It also depends somewhat on how well the game your playing is optimized; I got games from 2016 that struggle to maintain top performance but it’s more about how those games are coded than anything.

Remember it’s still a PC so you have the ability to tweak the performance to your liking and due to that I’m perfectly fine with it. It absolutely outclasses the Switch though and if you’re looking for a good handheld device this is it.

if you dont give a shyt about anti-glare screen, best bet is to just get a 64GB and replace the SSD. Them nvme 2230 SSDs shot up in price but its still a better value. I know people are scared to open up their decks but it literally is like a 10 minute process altogether and you only need to disconnect one cable to the battery. Piss easy with $5 prying tools.

if you want the anti-glare etched screen for playing outside in some sunlight, or refuse to open up the deck yourself and install an SSD, just get the 512GB version. It will be great out of the box.

256 GB is a decoy price imo

its been shown that like 9 out of 10 games load as fast from SD card as from the main SSD. You just want your OS and shader cache to be there on SSD and for the rest it doesnt really matter. 256 SSD oem will be like 30-50$ depending on how reliable youd want it to be. 512GB SSD is ~110.

Tbh you can just start with 64GB version and get a SD card and see if thats enough for your purposes.

I'm seeing these even the 512GB version selling on Facebook Marketplace for under retail now. Still don't regret selling mine.
