So are you saying Rakim just don’t fukk with rappers or with Nas specifically? I wouldn’t disbelieve this as Rakim has spoken out of both sides of his neck when it comes to Nas a couple times where you could side eye it.

I really didn’t like that he initially praised U.B.R and then did a 180 and said he didn’t like it. Felt that was foul

I think Ra the type of cat who has (or had) the tunnel vision. I remember reading a interview on a French magazine and the journalist asked him about the hoodlum soundtrack. He said the only reason he did that collab with the mobb is because he was supposed to be by himself but mobb deep wanted to do the soundtrack main single too (they were on the same label) so Ra went political and shared the space knowing that he usually don't do features.

They also asked him about his thoughts on pac and biggie, why he didn't do features with them, he said because although he respects these brothers, he was never impressed
The only cat he praised at that time (2002 2003)was Eminem saying if he was black he would be Mohammed Ali

You said you read this? Because I actually remember seeing an interview with Ra and some french dude and Ra was saying the same thing about Eminem and the french interviewer got aggy and said Eminem wasn’t all that impressive and him and Ra went back and forth lol

Never knew that. I knew Nas had buzz and every MC in NY knew who he was by 93 because he had Live At The BBQ, Back To The Grill Again, and of course Halftime out by then but I didn’t know Wu, ESPECIALLY as cliquish as they were back in their heyday would have shouted him out so early.

I think it was Ghost who said he first heard Nas from some white girls while on tour in Europe.
U also gotta understand alotta people had the bootleg Illmatic back in 93 as well.

Yeah that was the same interview lol. He was filmed but they put it on paper. I remember the video. The journalist said that if Eminem was black he wouldn't be Eminem and said that scarface was better

I dunno whether Rakim was hating or not but I'd imagine it must have been annoying for him to hear people call Nas "the next Rakim" or the NEW Rakim, when Ra felt like he was still a great lyricist/rapper. We forget that at one point rap was almost like evolution in the sense that dudes were coming out and making older dudes completely irrelevant. Rakim did it to quite a few people in fact. And he probably didn't think Nas was some great leap beyond himself, the same way Rakim was a leap beyond the cat/hat/jump/pump rhyme schemes before him.

Yeah, the only rapper I've ever seen Rakim sound genuinely enthusiastic about is Eminem.
