all you did was name story arcs and give vague examples.

i would like you to further clarify how batman and superman no longer reflect their 90's selves.
The difference between 90s Superman who was pretty much the "Dad" of the superhero community and the most recent (New 52 ) version is that Superman was a lot less of a boy scout. He was more acerbic and aggressive and didn't fit the cornball/apple pie personality that came before. He was a lot less of an "Establishment" guy too who would be more likely to take actions that the law wasn't keen on and not really give a damn. They retconned both of his parents being dead by the time he got to Metropolis so he was also more isolated and insular instead of being more open and trusting.

why strip superman of some of the things that defined his character for almost 70 years?

also hasn't DC pretty much admitted that this was a terrible decision, hence the move towards rebirth?

Superman has not be this consistent character for 70 years if you want to be factual about it. Superman has historically reflected the times and so when times change so did his personality and methods.
In the early days he was a social reformer reflecting the reality of his creators own Jewish heritage and the precariousness of the times taking on crooked politicians and the like with a smile on his face and quick witty one-liner preceding his taking out the bad guys.

In the 50s he became a tool of the Establishment. Superman in this era was a big stodgy block of patriotic, flag-waving muscle. It is this depiction of him, the cornball do-gooder boy scout, that influenced the Reeves/Donner films and has been the most accepted depiction of the character.

The 1960s was the time of the melodramatic soap opera influenced Superman who was almost always depicted on his covers having some sort of silly romantic or overdone emotional issue that was bothering him.

In the 80s he was a more human and fallible character who had casual sex and long periods of self-reflection.

In the 1990s he became the married and responsible shining light of the DCU. It was more of a return to the cliched boy scout which is why so many marketing tricks were tried with the character from killing him to giving him entirely different powers.

Superman has been the character you envision him as but that is not all he has ever been.

Since he covered superman I'll cover spider man

The guy from the 90s was married and constantly looking for excuses as to why he couldn't get this or why he couldn't do that. And so hung up on his failures that it crippled his future. Now he's become able to balance that out. He's got his own company, he's learned that there needs to be a balance to life and that being spider man doesn't mean that he has to stop being Peter or vice versa. He's lost his wife twice but he's also no longer so hung up on the idea of losing his aunt. He's accepted that death is a part of life. Doesn't mean he doesn't try to save everyone or put the weight of the world on his shoulders every now and then but he has a much more mature outlook on the world and his place in it along with no longer selling himself short. He's learned that there's more than one way to save the world and save himself

this is all just melodrama though, isn't it? are these things really essential to understanding the fundamental spiderman myth?

spiderman will always be the regular joe who was given great power and decided to use it to help others. he's intelligent, he's witty and he has difficulty balancing his personal life and his life as a hero. that's the foundation for the spiderman story from here until the end of time.

regardless of how writers to decide to fill in those blank spaces over time, that core tenant of the character will always remain.

the foundation has always been the same though. superman has always been a blue collar guy who goes to work and uses his great power to save others. he grew up in kansas, he leads a daily life as clark kent, and he loves lois lane. that's really all you need to know about superman in the grand scheme of things. saving the world, truth and justice, all that stuff.

any version of the character that doesn't adhere to that is a deviation.

That's your problem tho: you look at these characters in the most basic way and most basic understanding without diving deep or realizing how the events of each book or each writer shapes them. Peter being in charge of his own company and having his doctorate is a big deal and goes to inform his decisions just like him being married. Renew your vows showed how far he'd be willing to go to protect his daughter if he had one and it showed Peter in a different light. Yeah he's still the regular guy but how many regular guys do you know with doctorates and their own Fortune 500 companies? And when a regular guy sees his daughter in danger he can't do what Peter did to protect her.

These characters aren't cardboard cutouts who will remain the same over time. They will grow and adapt and add layers or even subtract some layers

you're right i don't care.

this isn't high drama. it's superheroes. gods and monsters. myths, legends.

when i was 3-4 years old it wasn't the melodrama or the deep and complex narratives that attracted me to batman and superman. it was guys in capes with superpowers fighting bad guys.

not saying there isn't room for all that extra stuff and expanding upon the myth, but it really isn't important at the end of the day. no one cares. it's all fluff.

People care that's why we read homie. If no one cared they would've stopped making comic books when you stopped reading
