Either way the delusions didn't keep me interested. Mainly because we already know he's insane. So it's not like they have to prove to me that he is.

It's like this movie wants to be shutter island, but with a comic book twist. But shutter island till this day leaves you with questions as to who the main character really was and if he was really crazy or not.
Well the father thing was to demonstrate his mom was a nut, which wasnt clear at the time

I really agreed with the NY Times review, found it overwrought, meandering, without much purpose, extremely hamfisted, but it did come together in a few scenes as Joker takes full form, towards the end. And, obviously, a dedicated and convincing performance by Phoneix, but to what end, in a dull, lifeless, repetitive movie? Yes, it felt grim and grimy, and ugly, and credit is due there, for whatever that was worth. Not worth the outcry, or the praise.

I was driving so I couldn't give a real review at the moment. But for me it basically came down to his origin story not making sense with the Joker that we've known him as in all the other movies/cartoons/comics etc

The movie should be called "Arthur"

That's my biggest issue. Gotham knows who he is. So it's like why even call him joker? Every other story joker was always a mysterious character that no one knew about, now all of Gotham knows it's Arthur? All of Gotham knows his story? Why is Joker so transparent when he's the least transparent person in the DC universe?

There wasn't much going on in this movie except Joker being disturbing and doing a bunch of laughing and dancing..

But why are you so compelled to want the same Joker story just re-told? That's not art, that's just re-hashing the same character we've been given for decades for the sake of making money. It's not anything fresh or original.

And being disturbing and doing a bunch of laughing ARE the anchor points of the Joker - you must only keep those two things + the clown get-up to let the audience know it's the Joker, everything else is up to how the creator decides to develop their version of the character

King Of Comedy is a classic. All the reviews are saying it basically jacks that movie to much lesser effect. I'm out.

And my other biggest gripe is the whole Joker / Bruce possibly being related thing. Just thought it was silly to even throw the idea out there to begin with , whether it's true or not true. But also, I always thought Joker and Batman we're close in age. Why is Joker in his 40's while Bruce is still a kid? By the time Bruce grows up Joker would be Bernie Sanders status.

I agree with this. If this movie was called Arthur or anything else it couldve went even more darker disturbing and violent but i think that was tone back for a reason. I think WB playing the what if game with this movie and are going to gauge what to do next based on the money and reaction thats why they playing both sides with it being connected but saying its stand alone. It would be a tragedy to waste Pheonix’s performance and this strong origin foundation for gotham.

the wrestling fans will understand this reference that WB should go the attitude era route like vince mcmahon. Disney wont go rated R or even PG13 with its MCU so instead of mimicing do what yall started off doing and build off this gritty world. Shazam and supes can still be the wholesome hope filled heroes balanced out by the serious shyt.

If able, can we discuss the odd framing and political themes running through the movie? The movie itself may not even merit these discussions, but these bits stood out to me

*Thomas Wayne is obviously a very overblown parable of a Bill De Blasio or Bloomberg liberal, the man is depicted as an absolute villain, he is practically foaming at the mouth, (the bathroom scene) or cackling with "coastal elite" disdain (the interview scene), and adds lines like "I'm just trying to help you", with a sneering contempt.

*The Occupy Wall Street movement is clearly satirized with the clown "Kill The Rich", scenes, to what extent does the director portray the violent, angry, murderous mob? He doesn't seem to have the sympathy of the poor in mind, to say the least.

*Taken with some of Phillips comments in recent profiles, about the "far left" and "cancel culture", does this add up to anything?
