The Mountain would have cut Loras in half if The Hound hadn't saved him. Loras is a top tier jouster, thats it. In terms of overall warrior ability, hes somewhere down on Syrio's level :skip:

Who is Arthur Dayne?

Arthur Dayne was a Kingsguard during the reign of the Mad King Aerys Targaryen

By some accounts he was the best swordsman of all time

He died at the mysterious Tower of Joy confrontation during Roberts Rebellion at the hands of Ned Stark and the GAWD Howland Reed.

Here is a rundown, free of spoilers:

Ser Arthur Dayne, known as the Sword of the Morning, was a famed and legendary knight from House Dayne and a member of Aerys II Targaryen's Kingsguard. He was Prince Rhaegar Targaryen's closest friend[1] and was also the brother of Lady Ashara Dayne. His nephew is Lord Edric Dayne.

Arthur wielded the greatsword called Dawn as part of his office as Sword of the Morning, carrying it slung across his back.[2] His accomplishments include defeating the Kingswood Brotherhood. He got the smallfolk of the kingswood to love him by paying for what he and his forces took and taking their grievances before King Aerys II Targaryen. In the end he slew the Smiling Knight in single combat and ended the threat of the Brotherhood. Following that victory, he knighted Jaime Lannister, who would later become a sworn brother of the Kingsguard.[3]

Arthur broke twelve lances against Prince Rhaegar Targaryen in a tourney held at Storm's End, losing to the prince.[4] At the Tourney at Harrenhal, he was defeated by Rhaegar once again.[5] Sometime after this, he, along with his other sworn brother Ser Oswell Whent, aided Rhaegar in the kidnap of Lyanna Stark. During the ensuing rebellion, their lord commander, Ser Gerold Hightower, was sent to find Rhaegar when the war started to become out of hand. When he found the crown prince, Gerold stayed with his two Kingsguard brothers in the Red Mountains of Dorne, on the orders of the prince.

Arthur died at the Tower of Joy fighting Lord Eddard Stark and his companions, but the exact circumstances of his death are unclear. In a memory of his father, Bran Stark recalls his father Eddard describing Arthur as the finest knight he ever saw, and elaborates further that Dayne would have killed him if not for Howland Reed.[6] According to Catelyn Tully, Arthur was the deadliest of the seven knights of Aerys's Kingsguard.[7]

Arthur is remembered as not only a skilled fighter but a valiant and true knight. Eddard Stark, Jaime Lannister, Barristan Selmy, and Viserys Targaryen all recall or remember Arthur with nothing less than absolute respect for both the man and his legend. After his death, Eddard rode directly to Starfall, the seat of House Dayne, to return the sword Dawn to his sister, Lady Ashara Dayne.[7]

EDIT: Here is an account of my favorite showdown in Westeros history:

The Smiling Knight was an infamous outlaw of the equally infamous Kingswood Brotherhood. He was thought to be insane, but was also a deadly swordsman.

History
Ser Jaime Lannister recounts that the Smiling Knight was his generation's Ser Gregor Clegane in terms of men's eagerness to best him in combat.[1] According to Jaime, [t]he Smiling Knight was a madman, cruelty and chivalry all jumbled up together, but he did not know the meaning of fear.[2] At some point during his career he killed Ser Victor Tyrell, cousin of Lord Mace Tyrell of Highgarden.

Ultimately the Smiling Knight was killed in a clash with the Kingsguard. During the combat, the Smiling Knight briefly crossed swords with Jaime Lannister, but Jaime held him off. Arthur Dayne next fought an extended exchange with him until the Smiling Knight's sword broke. Dayne paused the fight and allowed the outlaw to take a fresh sword. The Smiling Knight did so, but remarked that it was Dayne's famous sword Dawn that he truly desired. Dayne replied "Then you shall have it, ser." In their second exchange, the Smiling Knight was slain.[2]

Upon reflection, people call Arthur Dayne the greatest knight of all time, not the greatest swordsman

There is a distinction there, being a knight is about more than swordfighting

Hmm....maybe Barristan or Jaime actually truly are the GOATs :lupe:

Dayne said that him and Jamie duel to a stalemate :umad:, but with Dawn sword Dayne has the edge :ehh:

Jaime da Kangslayer, Sisterfukker, attempted child killer hate it or not, was the GOAT. Co-signed by two of the greatest swordsmen of all time and even held off a beast as a teenager. Come on man...

Yet couldn't beat a washed up Ned Stark? :childplease:

The legend of Jamie Lannister was a myth perpetuated by his careful choices of opponents (I'm sure the Mad King put up a valiant fight :skip:) and his faaaaather's gold. I wonder how many good lions Dayne got to tell those tales... regardless all that trumping up of Jamie backfired as Aerys II named him to the Kingsguard :mjlol:

Characters leaked for Game of Thrones season 5, with new details

2-630x419.jpg

Thanks to a tip from a Winteriscoming.net source, we have a better idea of how Game of Thrones season 5 is taking shape. Casting is in full swing, providing us with details about who the show will be adding next year- and a few of the changes that may happen with them.

Fans have been speculating that with Game of Thrones possibly filming in Spain next season that we’ll be seeing a lot of Dorne, and based on the role breakdown that has surfaced, they’re right.

We’ll tuck the details below a cut as they will include some spoilers about next year. In season 5, the characters we’ll be seeing include:

  • Prince Doran Martell – Doran is described as the major new player this year, appearing in multiple episodes. The fiftysomething prince uses a wheelchair, is reclusive and rules wisely. It appears the show is looking to continue the trend it started with Pedro Pascal, and cast Latino actors for the Martell clan.
  • Prince Trystane Martell – Trystane, the handsome fiance of Princess Myrcella, is being aged up to 18.
  • Areo Hotah - Doran’s personal bodyguard will appear throughout the season, assisting the prince with his duties. The show is particularly looking for a black actor to fill the role.
The Sand Snakes, Oberyn Martell’s b*stard daughters (with ages ranging 18-25):

  • Obara Sand – The eldest and most athletic Sand Snake will be having a major fight scene with a series regular character- not one who crosses her path in the books. This is an interesting change.
  • Nymeria Sand – Nymeria is described as “mixed race,” with her father being the fairer Oberyn and her mother being darker skinned. The second oldest of these Sand Snakes, she’s beautiful, emotional and very strong.
  • Tyene Sand - The youngest of the Sand Snakes that we meet uses her wits and seductive powers, and is less of a physical fighter than the other Sand Snakes. She is just as deadly as her sisters, however, but her weapon is poison.

  • High Sparrow - The books’ pious head of a religious movement will be appearing in several episodes in season 5.
  • Septa Unella – The show is looking for a character actress to play the imposing and unrelenting septa who spends a lot of time with a major series character next year.
  • Maggy the Frog- A fortune teller in A Feast for Crows, she’ll be in one episode next year.
  • Lollys Stokeworth – Just last week in “Mockingbird,” Bronn announced his intention to marry Lollys, whom Tyrion considers “dimwitted.” It looks like the sellsword will still be around next year.
  • Yezzan - A sleazy Meereenese slave owner.
  • The Waif – The strange child from the books that Arya encounters will likely be played by an older actress, one in her later teens, and we understand the show is specifically looking for a woman of East Asian descent for the part.

Ours is the Fury: There may be more casting information trickling in, so this list is by no means complete. The show may have already filled some roles, and that is why some parts are not present. I do hope that Arianne will be cast though, because while some aspects of her plot could be handled by Sand Snakes, not all can. A legitimate princess who is the heir isn’t the same as a b*stard, so that is my only concern about casting. As for the Snakes, the show has established that Oberyn does have eight daughters, but we always knew we wouldn’t get to see all of them. Consolidating their personalities into three of them makes sense, I think.
