It's a TV show. They don't have the budget to show those battles from Book 1.

From what I understand they had run out of money by that time. The script actually had some of the battle but they couldn't do it.
That battle seemed perfect for TV too, since you only see it from Tyrion's perspective on the side of a river. It's not like thousands of people charging at each other, Tyrion is on the outskirts dealing with 100 or so people.
