Gennady Golovkin and David Lemieux remain within regulations as far as weight loss heading into their October 17 middleweight unification title fight at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The manner in which they've reached that point, however, is a bit different from the road fighters normally travel in getting to this point.
As per the terms of the World Boxing Council (WBC) - whom recognizes Golovkin as its interim titllist (Golovkin is also the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super and International Boxing Organization (IBO) middleweight champ) - fights involving its sanctioning must undergo weight checks ahead of fight night. Fighters cannot weigh more than 10% above the contracted limit 30 days out and 5% above said limit seven days out.
Both fighters are within the 168 lb. maximum mark. Golovkin tipped the scales at 165.5 lbs, while Lemieux barely squeezed under the maximum as he checked in at 167.6 lbs during Saturday's weight check. The weights were confirmed by Tom Loeffler, managing director of K2 Promotion, Golovkin's promoter who presents the October 17 HBO-Pay-Per-View headliner in association with Golden Boy Promotions, who has Lemieux.
Golovkin (33-0, 30KOs) is actually slightly heavier than his registered weight for the 30-day check, when the knockout artist from Kazakhstan came in at a healthy 165 lbs. It's possible that the past few weeks have been about maintenace and adding strength as he has never missed weight through 33 professional contests and given his relatively light weight a month ahead of fight.
Lemeiux (34-2, 31KOs) was just under the 10% allowable limit 30 days out (175.8 lbs.). The hard-hitter from Montreal has shed eight pounds in three weeks, but will now functionally have to lose the same amoung of weight over the course of the next six days.
In addition, both fighters will have to jump back on the scale Saturday morning. As Lemieux is the International Boxing Federation (IBF) titlist, the New Jersey-based sanctioning body requires its champions and challengers to perform a same-day weight check, where they cannot weight any more than 10 lbs. above their official pre-fight weight. The same-day ceremony is traditionally held 12-15 hours prior to the scheduled opening bell.
The unification bout represents the first Pay-Per-View headliner for both fighters. Golovkin has emerged as a fast-rising star and the face of HBO boxing, with his all-action fights consistently providing strong ratings results.
Lemieux fights for the second time in an HBO production, as well as his second trip to the United States. His stateside debut also took place in New York, scoring a 10th round knockout of Gabriel Rosado last December at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
