Movie was cool 7/10. And I would probably enjoy it more if I was exposed to it prior to similar stuff like GoT and Star Wars. GoT especially has turned me off to this type of royal political intruige type stuff.
Thanks to all the book readers in the thread explaing stuff. Answered a lot of my questions prior to posting my review.

ON SECOND WATCH
THIS DEFINITELY SHOULD
HAVE BEEN A GAME OF THRONES
TYPE SERIES.

THE DUNCAN IDAHO CHARACTER,
HIS SKILLSET

AND HIS JOURNEY ON ARAKIS
SHOULD HAVE BUILT UP
OVER THE COURSE OF THE SEASON
TO GIVE HIS DEATH A BIGGER PAY OFF.

exactly. multiple character arcs arent given any room to breathe or have any impact because we barely got to know them

most of the people catching feelings in here have read the books and are mad the people that havent read them wanted more explanation on a franchise they admit is incredibly dense :dead:

Yo they did'nt even explain that "thinking machines" aka computers are forbidden in that time and era, and that the Spice allows EVERYTHING to be possible

That just popped into my head

They didn't even explain the concepts of mentats and all that

Yeah nah...this movie is light fam....REALLY light and I'm a huge fan of Dune

I brought that up a few days back; they didn't properly explain why the spice is the holy grail to each faction of the Imperium. Just a light touch on its importance to space travel and the Guild, which while important, isn't even half of it.

nikkas can catch feelings all they want, this film was damn good but the constraints on it left a lot of information obscured if not wholly untouched. That leaves viewers confused & there's no way to spin that, which is why I'm glad they are doing that prequel series on the Sisterhood.

The doctors betrayal makes no sense.
You betray the Duke to get your wife back but your planning to poison the guy who can give your wife back?

Why even betray Duke in the first place? For a shot at revenge? Kind of short sighted but guess the story needed to forward.

If I'm remembering correctly, in the book it was more clear that his motivation was:

1. To end his wife's suffering - in the event she was still alive, him carrying this out would either mean her death or her release, either way her suffering would be over.

2. Really, the main thing he hoped to accomplish was get in position to kill the fukking baron. He didn't trust the Baron, assumed he would kill both him and his wife if he hadn't already, so the duke would be the bait to at least give him a chance at revenge.

Read again, I think book readers are just as split as non-readers. Several of us big Dune fans liked the movie but would have preferred it was longer and explained more. Like I said, I think about 20 more minutes to set up a few more storylines better would have been doable.

On the other hand, movie already over $300 million at the box office, 82% critics and 90% audience on Rotten Tomatoes, 8.2 rating on IMDB, and the vast majority of all those tickets and positive reviews are the work of non-readers who loved the movie despite the lack of exposition.

@Rhakim Where did the Islamic sufi order references come from? I understood some descriptions in the flick also with Lynch's version.
Was Frank Herbert into Mystic Sufism?
Any clarification?

The thing with Yueh and the poison is that he's not an idiot. He knows his wife is probably long dead, but he has to do what he can for her because. He fully expects to die but maybe Duke/House Atreides can forgive him if he sets things up for them to avenge themselves...and get revenge for himself and his wife. So he plants the poison too with Leto, tells him to use it at the right time, and leaves the ring and tent for Paul.

You don't need to read the book or more scenes to get all of that. All you're really missing is that Yueh been sabotaging shyt since he got to Arrakis and that ppl were looking for a spy.

After BR2049 they were never going to let Denis release another 3 hr+ scifi movie. And this is with him already cutting a ton of scenes, let alone all the exposition that a ton of people wanted. I get it, but it just wasn't really possible.

I liked the books but I ain't never research Frank Herbert's life like that, so I don't know what he based his ideas on.

In the books at some point it's explained that thousands of years earlier in history, some powerful government had forced all of Earth's religions to come together and produce a single Holy Book that contains only the things that they can all agree on. Sort of like China forcing its government-approved faiths to abide by their rules, this was a "do it or else" moment. What they produced was called the "Orange Catholic Bible" and became the mainstream religious document with the most staying power. While by this point in time none of the Houses seems to follow it anymore and it's considered sort of taboo, Gurney Hallack is still a devotee who quotes it repeatedly and Dr. Yueh slips a copy to Paul secretly.

What the Fremen follow, "Zensunni", is portrayed as an earlier pre-Orange Catholic Bible faith, apparently a mix of elements of Zen Buddhism and Sunni Islam. What they actually took from those two religions isn't spelled out much in the book, except that the Fremen use some Islamic religious words, have a belief about a messiah (mehdi), and are deeply into practicing self-control and discipline.

I wonder if its partially enspired by the Sikh religion, which is a unification of Islam and Hinduism.

Just blindly watched this, had no idea it was based on book(s). I guess with that ending that means there is another movie coming? Not sure i understand what's going on either or what the purpose going forward is. I feel like I enjoyed the movie though. Will probably watch again and see if I understand it more the second time around.

I enjoyed it. I didn't see the original or read the book. Maybe because the complaints I've read about the movie was that it was difficult to follow I paid more attention, but it wasn't hard to understand what was going on. There's details that will probably clear up once the second one drops but it wasn't hard to follow overall. The visuals were amazing, the score just as good, the pace was perfect (the 2.5 hours flew by). I give it 7/10.
