Console gaming wasn't doing that hot in Japan. Their market more or less switched to mobile gaming. That's part of the reason almost every Japanese console game ends up coming to the west. Their developers and publishers realize that the home market can't provide enough sales to sustain them anymore.
It doesn't take much for a portable game to outsell a console game.
This is why Nintendo went after Unreal and Unity support so vigorously because a lot of those developers use those engines for their mobile games.

Online will be $20 a year started next year and requires you to use your smartphone, download a nintendo app, and communicate through your phone.
Nintendo's solution for online communication is basically to call you friends and put them on speaker phone.
I'm being dead serious. Look it up.
They will give you free classic games though, so for $20 a year that alone is worth it IMO.
