In Switch's case it's true due to some developers themselves saying they are waiting to see if it will flop or not. Here's a list of 3rd party Wii games btw
The Top 10 Third Party Wii Games - GameFAQs
I keep saying this but we've been through over 20 years of this lane Nintendo has been in with third parties. If either side really wanted change to their relationships in over 2 decades that could have happened.

When the Wii was a success where were the quality third party games?

I've grown out of what I would consider video game fandom. I'm not a Nintendo fan. I'm a consumer and I consume products that interest me. I'm not rooting for or against Nintendo. In my ideal landscape Nintendo partners with Sony or Microsoft and stops putting out low powered mostly wack gimmick consoles so as a consumer I don't have to keep buying them to play the 5-6 games in a given generation I want to play on them. As a consumer who spends money that's better for my wallet.

I get that you're actively rooting for them but this pattern has gone on lone enough that you don't have to be in denial about what's going on here. Nintendo is the same stubborn we're going to do things our way and not listen company they've always been and they've burned so many bridges over the last 20 years that third parties are skittishly putting out table scraps on Nintendo's platform.

Nobody is really excited about another Skyrim or Rayman Legends port games from 2011 and 2013. Without a massive amount of super casual gamers like the Wii got this thing sells to the Nintendo hardcore home console crowd that pushed the Wii U to what 13.5 million sold over 4 years? Nintendo will continue to do all the heavy lifting on their own platforms like they have for so long. If they do bring back that super casual crowd you'll see more shovelware like the Wii days.

The scenario where the Switch takes off and you get massive amounts of quality third party games that aren't old ports is highly unlikely and Nintendo themselves has done little to nothing to bring that about.

I'm not in denial. There is actually proof this time around. It was evident in the very first Switch trailer when they showed Skyrim, some NBA game and the blog by Nvidia. As a matter of fact, Nvidias blog was all you needed to read to understand they were trying to entice 3rd party developers this time around.

Older interview about Sony boss views on the switch

DS: 2017 will see the launch of another new console, Nintendo's Switch. What do you think of it, and where do you see it sitting in the console ecosystem?

SY: I think it's a very unique system. It's very interesting that they've designed the system to work well with more conventional games in terms of inputs and buttons. So I think it's good for core gamers and their marketing message focused on that.

DS: Do you still see Nintendo as competition in terms of hardware sales, or do they now exist in a completely different market?

SY: I think they're going to cover a new market for themselves.

Nintendo needs to continue doing what it's currently doing. They have their own market, and they prefer to cater to that market specifically. Reggie Fils-Aimé of Nintendo already made it clear that Nintendo is not interested in joining a "spec" war. They already did that before with the N64 when it was the most advanced console of that generation. Nintendo recognizes that no matter how you redesign these systems they will never be able to compete with the PC. Thats the gimmick of Sony and Microsoft, so instead of focusing on the spec gimmick Nintendo decides to focus on game play, instead of "specs." Game play has continued to remain stagnant on those systems while Nintendo has continued to innovate in that space.

As a consumer, I will use my PC for games that are not found on the switch; as such will always look better compared to a system which seeks to replicate the PC. Nintendo isn't trying to do that.

However, none of these 3rd party companies are loyal. They are all about money and they will go where the money is. If Nintendo can provide a platform where 3rd parties can run their games with no problem, while having a market for which their games can be sold they will cross over to Nintendo easily.

We get it, the Wii U was a failure, but it was a failure due to Nintendo's own fault. Analyst all reported it would flop before it even came to market. However, the Switch will not be a failure.

Final Fantasy 7: An oral history
These are comments from actual Square employees at the time when they requested Nintendo use CDs on the N64 and Nintendo politely told them to fukk off. Square came back and told they that they were going with Sony. Nintendo effectively said don't let the doorknob hit you on the way out and never come back.
At that time, Square was really close to Nintendo — we were basically like a second party for them. So when their new system was in development, we gave them lots of advice, like, “You’re going to need a CD-ROM drive for it,” “You don’t have enough bandwidth to do what we’re trying to do,” and, “With what you have now, we’re not going to be able to make an RPG.” We gave them lots of advice. But [Nintendo president] Yamauchi-san at Nintendo basically refused to listen to any of it. And that’s when Sakaguchi-san and the management team at Square decided, “OK, we’re going to go with Sony now.”

They said, “Oh, we don’t need that.” Their philosophy has always been that Nintendo hardware is for their games, and if a publisher wants to publish, “OK you can do it.” But if you don’t like it, “We don’t want you.”

What I heard was Nintendo said, “If you’re leaving us, never come back.”

When we made the decision to go with Sony, for about 10 years we basically weren’t allowed into Nintendo’s offices.
Nintendo is still just as defiant. It wasn't that long ago they insisted people didn't want to play games online. Still even closer they gave us tedious shyt like "friend codes." Even closer they refused to make mobile games when the industry begged them until their shareholders made them do it. Now they're gonna charge to play games online and give you a single free monthly game that they take away at the end of the month when industry standard practice is to allow gamers to keep the games as long as they keep active subscriptions and to give gamers at least 4 free games a month.

They just came off their worst selling home console (excluding the Virtual Boy) or all time and they're basically doubling down on all the shyt they were doing before just reapplied to another low powered console gimmick.

They are literally this as their home console buyer base continues to evaporate.

This company is just as out of touch right now as they were over 20 years ago when Square asked for a CD drive and Nintendo told them no. To top this all off the guy at the top expects the Switch a system launching with like what 5 games the best of which is a Wii U holdover they kept delaying to sell as well as the Wii.

You brought up old 2nd party Nintendo beef.

That was then, this is now. Nintendo has been doing good by their 2nd party developers lately. Second party developers

Anyway, have you all seen the developer Switch that was leaked?

It's showing a larger battery and more memory than the Switch thats about to be released. I guess the guy on Reddit who leaked the Joycons way back maybe correct in his assessment about his company developing 2,000 developer Switches with increased specs (He did leak the Joycon's). Considering how the Switch is using a mobile chip, and how fast that area is developing right now, I wouldn't be surprised if an advanced addition of the Switch was released in a year or 2.

That's the developers kit. Those come with 64gb of memory. The Switch is already over 2 years old from a development standpoint.

3rd party is important in trying to gain more casual gamers for sure but I'm wondering why so many people in here are hung up on that. If anything, I want more 1st party titles. That's what I'm about. I want the exclusives. I'm not gonna play COD and shyt on Nintendo anyway.

I don't think we live in a world where people are choosing Sony or Nintendo. Or Nintendo or Microsoft. We live in a world where it's Nintendo as your second console or Nintendo as your handheld. That's their lane. And they should do fine with that.

actually, we live in a world where mobile gaming from smartphones and tablets surpassed console and pc gaming last year. https://www.google.com/amp/www.cnbc...evenue-to-pass-console-pc-for-first-time.html

for instance, i no longer play pc or console games.

i play on my iphone, android and ipad, as well as emulators on those devices My Emulation Setup

Basically my iphone is my first gaming device but after the Switch, my iphone will be 2nd and the Switch my first.

This is the future breh. Playing games anywhere at anytime with anyone has a higher priority than expensive home setups.

and 3rd party won't be an issue for Switch. Nintendo went out of their way to get 3rd party developers involved.

but like mike said I only care bout their first party games.

and their 2nd party.

Of course a new COD, NBA 2K or Madden would be dope, especially if they came out date to date with the other versions. But in all likelihood, those Switch versions will be gimped, half assed and have less content compared to the others. FIFA on the Switch reportedly running on the PS3/360 engine already painted the picture for what's to come regarding those games.
