More often than not I tend to take that L.
Some Igbos (a vocal minority admittedly) feel they are descendants from Israel, and in school we were widely taught that Yorubas originated somewhere in Egypt or Saudi Arabia (all a load of bull in my opinopn). There cultures like male circumcision that are widely practiced throughout Nigeria that brought about these beliefs.
This, in addition to pervasive Christian Evangelical beliefs that most Southerners were taught in Sunday Schools has brought about an unhealthy and uniformed affinity to Israel.
Hopefully with the advent of DNA testing we can go about dismantling all these notions and come together as an African people. I believe more and more young Nigerians are rejecting these theories. Foreign religions have really done a number on Nigerians. Funny thing is that when Nigerians do DNA tests, they are finding that most times a huge chunk of their ancestry comes from outside Nigeria (Benin, Togo, Congo and Senegal). As far as I know, nobody as ever found Jewish or Middle Eastern ancestry.
