It was still crazy how much talent they were able to stockpile because of the lucky way dominos had fallen in 2015-2016 which enabled them to go WAY over the salary cap. $46 million max to Steph, $38 million max to Klay, $25 million to Draymond, $5 million to Looney, then the draft picks ($9 for Wiseman, $5 for Kuminga, $4 for Moody).....they had $150 million on the books, not just over the cap but past the first apron too, and yet they were still able to add a $32 million player like Wiggins.
The circumstances where Steph got way underpaid, Draymond got way underpaid, Barnes turned down a deal, the salary cap spiked massively, and Durant agreed to take a pay cut all combined to allow then to sign KD in 2016 when no title team is ever able to just add a max free agent like that without touching their core. And then they kept parlaying that roster advantage to allow them to basically operate as if a different salary cap applied to them than to other teams for the next eight years.
