Can't compare the NFL to other sports since the injury risk is so high. Still, the contracts suck and the NFL player's union is complete trash. Players got screwed on the last agreement and they will get screwed on the next one.

NFL really shouldn't be compared to other leagues, though. It's unique....but again...the contracts and the way they treat the players is crap.
there are easy ways to make provision for injuries, that's not the big issue in regards to how shady NFL contracts can be. the big issue is teams being able to walk away from contracts with players who are meeting/exceeding expectations all because they want to pay a QB or they simply feel like it, etc. dudes get strongarmed into restructuring two years after signing deals, that's laughable, especially when on the opposite hand an undervalued/lyoung players entering their primes have to fukking sit out, bytch, whine, and look like kids throwing tantrums to get better contracts while the team works to franchise them, exercise options, or won't budge on a better deal. i'm not shedding a tear for millionaires, but i know got damn well what i expect/demand from my employers, and i can't fault anyone else - pro athlete or not - for wanting the same

This PFT commenter on that very same article hit the nail squarely on the head:

Many of the comments show a lack of understanding of basic economics.

The NFL Players Association freely negotiated the CBA with the league. The NFLPA doesn’t ask for contracts to be fully guaranteed because that would mean more money for lower quality players but less money for higher quality players. For example, Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers can get the size contracts they do because their teams know that they can always cut lesser players to fund payments to Brees and Rodgers. If teams have to pay more to players like Mathias Kiwanuka then they will pay less to superstars.

What many people commenting in this thread don’t understand is that the total amount paid to the players as a whole won’t change, just the amount paid to lower quality players.

This nonsense statement is riddled with bullshyt!

Any system in which contacts can be terminated without a buyout is criminal in my opinion.

Blame the players union its the weakest and dumbest in all of sports

Also Kiwaunuka is lucky he has a spot on the team hes done nothing on the field in years

players can absolutely sign one year deals. nothing is stopping them. its called negotiating. i have zero sympathy for guys who agree to terms of a deal, then whine about how shytty they think they have it years after the fact. they had all the leverage in the holdout a couple years back, and decided not to change shyt. then get mad years later. what kinda logic is that

Unless you are an aging veteran are just top 1 or 2 at your position...no team is going to give you a one year deal...

And that's a terrible move for the player...you sign a one year deal...get hurt in training camp...now you released and rehabbing an injury...yikes...

Players don't want a one year deal...they constantly bytch about the franchise tag...which is pretty much a pro-rated 1 year deal based on your position

whats the difference? you sign a contract, get hurt in training camp and get released anyways. if you gamble on yourself and win, you get paid. if you end up stinking, you will end up being a cap casualty. the onus on a "bad contract" is squarely put on the party that is agreeing to the contract and signing their name on it, not the ones offering it up

Anyone arguing that these arent bad deals definitely doesnt follow other american sports.

In baseball, you can sign a 10 year guaranteed deal. in the NBA, you can get a 5 year guaranteed deal. You get injured? Then the owner still gotta pay your ass. Break your ankle in football, you aint got no signing bonus, you are in the bushes immediately.

Football definitely screws over the players. Wasnt there some special on ESPN how most football players end up broke? Thats not fair.

And its even worse because of the immense popularity of the sport and how much the NFL makes.

he is free to negotiate the terms of his contract. you dont sign a contract, then bytch about it not being right years later. he was also free to say eat a dikk when the giants asked him to take a pay cut and test the market. he chose not to. had he thought his market was going to be a couple million more than 1.5, that family is being uprooted in an instant.

Yet that's exactly what the Giants did and you're in here acting like Kiwanuka is wrong for pointing this out. :heh:

It'd be awesome if the NFL got rid of franchise tags and implemented guaranteed contracts, this way you can see guys like Cam or Luck possibly go to the Jets or Raiders and players seeing majority of their checks.

the giants didnt bytch about anything. restructuring or outright cutting his ass at any time was in the language of the contract that he signed.
