Doesn't everybody have to get a regents diploma to graduate in NY? That's how it was when I graduated in 01. Matter fact 2001 was the first year they made that a requirement and half the state didn't graduate that year.

A lot of kids don't graduate because of the regents. nikkaz taking science and math regents 5,6,7 times and not passing:huhldup:

There is no one single cause for all of this....Though I know it'll mostly be blamed on "Black pathologies".

The kids are at fault

The teachers are at fault

The schools are at fault

The local government is at fault

And yes the culture is at fault to a a degree also.

plenty of blame to go around.

kids are never at fault in this situation

I know in California, they have the CAHSEE(California High School Exit Exam), which is ridiculously easy. If you can't pass this you deserve to be shot in the head, execution style.(no excuses, no apologies) :birdman:

They give you like 6 chances to pass the test, before you graduate. :snoop:
Remarkablely, numerous individuals couldn't pass this waste of time test. :heh::why:

To make matters worse, it's based off of 6th grade math and 8th grade composition. :damn::scusthov::ohhh:

They were both born and raised in Jamaica. They got degrees in Jamaica, my father went to Kingston College, not sure where my mom went. Never asked, lol. But they both grew up poor and they both have seven siblings each. Im talking one room shack no electricity, no bathroom, no kitchen, nothing else. So they know where they came from and how important education was in getting them out that situation. My father went to school and took care of the family along with my grandfather since he was the oldest. My father was the one that brought them up out the slums and bought the house that my grandparents still live in to this day.

Yup. My parents are also immigrants (Bermuda and Guyana) who grew up dirt poor as fukk, got an education, came here and made it to middle class. They instilled the importance of work and education in me at an early age that is invaluable. Hopefully my kids won't be lazy ass bums due to having American parents.

Yeah, it does seem like kids of immigrants definitely are at a cultural advantage.

Most of my family is from Detroit (or elsewhere in the US) and I gave not a fukk about my grades in high school (other than doing enough to pass) and really only got into college off of test scores. Got like a 29 ACT, 1300/1600 SAT but only graduated with a 2.8 GPA.

Really wish I'd bothered to get good enough grades for a decent scholarship, if I had I probably wouldn't have this student loan debt. :snoop:

am serious. kids are a product of there environment, give me a situation and Ill tell you why there not at fault

The entire point of my first post is that it's not an either or situation. The kids environmental obviously plays a role, but the kids themselves play a role also. There are kids who come from the exact same backgrounds and situations who graduate and succeed. Just like there are kids who come from great situations and have ever possible opportunity and still don't graduate and because life long fukk ups.

Regents ain't no joke though. Not all schools used to offer it, only the better ones. It's funny I was just reminiscing with my man about HS and we were talking about regents. We had to have 2 years of regents science and 2 years of regents math then one more year of either regents science or math. I finished all my regents requirements by sophomore year but I went to one of those schools where everybody was already taking regents. It was the standard for us but I could see it being a problem for those "Fair East Side High" kids.

I really don't understand how those other kids were supposed to get all those credits if they weren't taking them the first 3 years.

It's a setup, b.

Nah in the same boat. I didn't give a fukk all throughout middle and high school. I was an ignorant knucklehead literally dumbing it down and acting ashamed of my intelligence. I cringe when I think of how I used to be. I graduated with a 2.8 GPA too. I could've had a 4.0 if I gave a fukk. I didn't buckle down academically until my junior year in college.

I tried to boil down your nonsenical argument into the nitty gritty implications. It doesn't matter what you feel, its about the reality.

If there are 2 towns, lets call them Shelbyville and Springfield, and they exhibit seperate characteristics, what are the implications of such statements.

Shelbyville:

Mostly black
Uneducated
Families broken up
Different economic circumstances
Totally different culture.

Springfield:

Mostly White
Educated
Families intact
Different economic circumstances
Totally different culture.

Hiphoplivesforeva: Maybe if the people of Shelbyville changed their culture, and their cultural tendancies to that of Springfield, maybe they would do better.

Without ANY facts, or barometers as to how each affects the community, and without any weight as to which one is the most pertinent, that statement is the same as

Hiphoplivesforeva: Maybe if the people of Shelbyville changed their Race, to that of Springfield, maybe they would do better.

Hiphoplivesforeva: Maybe if the people of Shelbyville changed their Education, to that of Springfield, maybe they would do better.

Hiphoplivesforeva: Maybe if the people of Shelbyville changed their Family structure, to that of Springfield, maybe they would do better.

This is essentially the fallacy of conservative reasoning on this issue. Is this a clarification?

Just because your too dimmwitted to understand the complexities of my argument without pigeon holing my statement into some binary this or that proposition is your issue not mine. No where did I make the broad generalizations that you made, yet you insist on trying to fit me into some neat little box in an effort to casually dismiss my argument.

The reality of the matter is that there is a serious issue with the mindset in the black community that cannot simply be all blamed on poverty. Whether or not you chose to realize or not is your issue not mine.

i used to live in Utica for a while, the white people up there are racist, the cops are just terrible, i remember getting pulled over for riding a bike around my school campus :snoop:

I can see also how it would be hard for a man of color to succeed upstate, theres literally nothing but the local rec to help relieve stress...
my great friend i met there just graduated school and has a child on the way...he used to sell but he on the straight and narrow, upstate aint nothing but bad news for balck ppl, the Syracuse/buffalo area are some of the poorest in the nation so i can understand where lack of government funding for schools leave minority basically ass out

Didn't go through the whole thread but anyone notice the difference of graduation rates between blacks and whites in Detroit?
