No reason he couldn't be a Japanese American man. Cac'd the whole thing out for no reason...white anime fans don't even want cac leads in these adaptations (i.e. Dragon Ball Evolution).
There is no reason why he has to be one either. The movie is an American remake. There are no all or majority Japanese-American cities, schools or whatever, so to think that they are able to adapt the movie in America with everyone being Japanese is ridiculous. It is not whitewashing just as The Ring is not whitewashing. They are not keeping the Japanese setting while throwing white people in their like with Ghost in the Shell. (The cyborg in the original is white by the way, but people are not trying to address the fact that the Japanese draw themselves as white people.) Countries pick up foreign properties and adapt them to suit their market all of the time. shyt, there is a Columbian version of Breaking Bad. Why are people acting oblivious now? There are quite a few Japanese Death Note movies if you want to see a Japanese version that terribly. People are becoming straight up imbeciles, and their arguments really do not even make any sense.
