"Vernon Family" sounds like the final draft for "You Can't Kill Me." They both have that 80s energy to them.
Also, Hip Hop is Dead is underrated as hell. The tracklist/sequencing could use some help, but it reminds me a lot of Untitled in that both albums deserve more recognition than they get, and are victims of the "Nas picks bad beats" stereotype.
MOST of the production on HHID is good. Untitled’s production is excellent in my opinion.
I feel like I understand what Nas was trying to do on HHID. The first half of the album was exploring how Hip Hop died and from Black Republican on he’s trying to show how to resurrect it.
Black Republican- Unity between once warring factions
Not Going Back- Not allowing the hood to dictate your moves.
Still Dreamin- Not allowing other people’s dreams to bring you down/deter you
Hold Down The Block- How to represent where you come from while still progressing
Blunt Ashes- learning from the mistakes from our musical elders
Let There Be Light- How to sustain a long career as a rapper
Play On Playa- If you gonna spit that pimp/flay shyt. Do it with skill and some form of integrity.
Can’t Forget About You- Appreciating Nostalgia and those who paved a path
Hustlers- Unity between East and West Coast
Hope- Nas summarizing it all
