I was laughing cause I doubt ANYONE in here could afford a brownstone in Bedstuy right now. But if your uncle has the money then hell yea, bedstuy is like puppy land right now.

I lived in Bedstuy on Madison and Broadway in 2012. It was nice. Lots of room to walk around. Good distance of stores and amenities to the area. Safe (safer than I expected).
did you see young families ? is are there parks etc for little kids..

Just try to stick close to limit his search to west of Thompkins Ave. I've seen white girls walking around at 1 in the morning in BS. Further east is still kinda iffy
. And stay away from the Marcy and Lafayette PJs. As far as schools, I'd def go private if he can afford it. If they're in grade school, he should get them some prep work for the SHSAT test so they can get into Brooklyn Tech, which is a short bus ride away. I missed out on going there by a couple of points... What my life would've been 
800-1mm will buy you something decent.
As far as areas, bedstuy as a whole is pretty safe and gentrified now. There are projects littered throughout that keep it from fully gentrifying but for the most part theres rarely any action poppin in the projects. Theres pockets of crime areas but the pockets are block by block and extremely isolated. The only areas that are truly dicey are east of Ralph Ave, there you get closer to East New York and you dont want that element
If he can, prioritize the sub-neighborhood of Stuyvesant Heights. Its a beautiful Historic District in bedstuy thats generally looked at as
What id advise though is find a fixer upper in Clinton Hill. If he renovates it in 3 years the value will easily shoot up $1mm in 3 years. easily.

Na breh east of Tompkins is fine. Matter fact in Bedstuy Lewis Ave is the it block (cacs call it SoLA
) Stuyvesant ave is pretty revered too as far as bedstuy. Nostrand/Bedford is filthy and is struggle marketed as Clinton Hill (which is a lie). Marcy PJs are fine, its just intimidating, and not good for property values. Lafayette PJs you hear action out of on the news every once in a while, so stay away.
As far as schools
, public schools are shot outside of Brooklyn Tech in that area of Brooklyn
