Gang of bad guys about to put in work. Boss tells young brother/son "you can sit this one out, you don't have to do this". Brother/Son trying to prove his worth goes anyways, gets killed by good guy thus setting up the plot of Boss avenging death of fam he told not to go in the first place.

I never thought of this, but that perfectly explains Finn. They created a character they didn't know what to do with, so they had him go off on meaningless sidequests.
