Modern day polygamy in Africa: first wife feeding second wife goes viral

This is a bad comparison. You're listing a number of failed or failing states in Africa and then pointing to articles that indicate that polygamy is what undermines these states. These states also share something else in comparison...oh, what was it...oh yeah, they're all formerly-colonized states that are places where people of different backgrounds were banded together as a country based on how European powers carved up the map and then were left to try and create coalition governments out of nothing after the colonizing powers left.

That's probably more of an issue than the tradition of polygamy. My goodness.

It's also a bad comparison because the United States =/= any African country on that list in so many ways that the comparison is utterly incoherent.

Don't be silly. We have lived in countries which practise polygamy and it really makes the young men crazy. There is a reason Boko Haram kidnaps only preteen girls. These are men who wouldn't have that in any normal circumstances in their natural environment.

The key is the education of the girl child first and foremost and laws to allow her to say no then punishment but it won't happen overnight. The northern Nigeria for example is gearing to be worse than Somalia

I don't think you understand that another being desirable doesn't take away from me.

You get women now because there’s no infrastructure to allow women to not give up on monogamous relationships because they know they can’t rePlace the other person.

In polygamy, women never move on. They can stick around and never have the incentive to give a single guy the chance because there is the infrastructure for them to get into beyond a joint relationship but a full marriage.

With polygamy the whole infrastructure changes and the girl you’re with has less incentive to date you because she can afford to wait for her spot.

In monogamy, there is only one spot and women move on.

If no one moves on, there are fewer mates for everyone else.

Im probably one of the few people in this thread that really has first hand knowledge of this

my dads younger brother has four wives (plus two sidepieces)

wouldnt wish this on my worst enemy.....

each wife has her own house, he spends a different night in each house , has about 11 kids, he has three mobile phones and i cant think of a time ive been with him and one of his phones arent ringing

All his wives get along but he has to be very carefull not to show favouritism , so if he buys a car for one he gotta buy a car for all , Im cool with all his wives but im really close to the first and last one

Whatever problems you have in a normal marriage times that by the number of wives you have , thats why most of you talking that crap about supportimg polygamy arent built for it , its a constant juggling act trying to keep everyone happy and in check

What kind of sickness do you have if four different women aren't enough? He has two women on the side as well?

from his point of view it was better to have multiple wives than cheat on his wife , he was upfront with his first wife from day one , culturally its more acceptable in Africa and to be blunt many women would rather be wife number two or three than not be married at all , there is a big emphasis on marriage so its less of a taboo , in some circles its also seen as a sign of prosperity having more than one wife

1. They get married later in life
2. They select younger and younger women.

People married younger anyway, before they reach 20.

Most marriage were arranged between families and clan. Polygamy did not create a crisis of women available, since it only concerned a very few number of men.
