You're absolutely right about Overwatch, but the logic on thinking it's not bigger than CoD is something I can at least piece together. It's entirely due to how the gaming news cycles treat each game. Most of the news about Overwatch feels like it's negative most of the time, highlighting the confusion over OW2, how people don't like changes, OWL fukkery, or the occasional mention of player base. Negative news about CoD comes and goes quickly, and the annual release cycle lends to people forgetting about negativity surrounding it quick.

The decider was the difference in subscriber volume after purchase. If AT&T bought T Mobile, they would have been by far the largest provider in the country. Even after buying Metro PCS and Sprint, T Mobile was still in third. I think they JUST took second (according to them), and that's after a few years of handing out phones like candy, and basically bribing people to switch by buying them out of their situations with other carriers.
