Math Hoffa cohost says if lyricism was the thing like back in the days Kendrick Lamar wouldn’t be up there like that .

I think guys like Kendrick and J Cole are dope for their era and peers, but a lot of you young fans don't realize that when a LYRICIST like Jay Z came in the game, nobody paid him any attention in 1996. If you go back just 6 year prior to that, guys like Grand Daddy IU and Masta Ace dropped iconic classic slept on debuts, got lost in the shuffle against guys like Kane, Rakim, KRS, Cube, G rap and LL that dropped the same year.

So yes Kendrick is a dope rapper, but he's dope for his era. And that aint no "hating" or whatever you mfers like to call it. I don't have a problem with KL at all, I just call it like I see it. When fans are more worried abut beats, hooks, and "he's real" more than lyrics, this is what you get from an era.

I just don’t see how one could listen to Euphoria and 6:16 and come to these types of conclusions, but to each their own

Like I think he’s definitely helped by the fact that lyricists aren’t as valued today, but the guy is top tier, especially with his current songwriting ability

you literally named a bunch of pioneers as the standard....thats not even a fair comparison.

And who were regarded as the best of the best.

there a thousand MCs from that time period in the 90s who were not pioneers of anything on are regarded high from nostalgia and bias.

The guys you named literally gave a blueprint and there was a bunch of people who did MADLYBS with their style and get high praise; and in reality had one hot song or maybe an album if they're lucky.

and were backed by the machine 2 boot.

Serious question: What is a lyricist? Like is there an actual definition for it?
Someone who recites lyrics, I think, lol.

A great rap lyricist, imo, is someone who, when they rap, you can tell they didn't write that shhit in the car on the way to the studio. You can hear that there's no way they wrote that in 10 minutes while passin blunts to their mans in the studio then just went in the booth and spit it real quick. It's obvious it took some thought...some brain power was involved, and some time, etc... I think that outweighs even the entendres and multis and all that, the density of what's being said.

Nas is considered by a lot of rap fans one of/thee best lyricist ever...and on a lot of his most amazing lyrical showcases he isn't really syllable or wordplay-centric, it's more-so the detailed, extensive picture he's painting with the words. Etc... Lupe on "bytch Bad" is another good example of no fancy shmancy stuff but lyrically it's still very powerful. Biggie has a lot too. Face. Etc...

Why isn't it a fair comparison if they are calling him an all time great???? If he's considered an all time great, why can't he be compared to other all time greats???? Or do yall want to keep comparing him to the Migos, lil baby, da baby, your baby, their baby, our baby?? And in 1990, none of those guys were considered all time greats at that point. Most were on their 1st to 3rd albums

absolutely no one has said Ant is an all time great. YOU guys are saying KL is an all time great, has one of the best discographies ever and so forth, but when we compare him to the legends, then you scream, "well that's not fair, we shouldn't compare him to all time greats". Make that make sense to me. On one hand you're telling us he's a legend, on the other hand you're saying it's not fair to compare a legend to other legends... :dahell:

Everybody has an opinion now. I don't know breh or his resume; but what I do know is he dressed like shyt sitting in a closed barbershop being a crab in a barrel.

Another old head in the clip was like "I listened to drill for an hour and felt crazy"

what a mess of a crowd. they really have no business in any of this; I get it this is probably their lifeline for any source of income but cot damn.

I know who you are as a poster. Nobody who wasn't the originator will ever get the accolades in your eyes.

Sports is a great analogy. People make these stoopid comparisons in sports all the time and they never make sense. Its the same for music.

Ya'll just are stuck in one moment of time and nothing will ever match it.

thats really what it boils down 2.

Magic will never get to play Lebron 1v1 at the same age in the same prime........but lets talk about it :dead:

What’s a lyricist? Has Kendrick benefited from a weak era? Yeah. But he’d still be amongst the top 5-10 rappers(conceptually) if he existed in the 90s. Lyricist is a weird term. Because you’ll have have rappers with crazy wordplay(“lyricist”) but they’re not making art or aren’t talking about anything.

He's not Eminem level when it comes to the number of syllables, doesn't do punchlines like Wayne Banks luda, he's more lyrical in a nas type way with good concepts, but he's not a cat in the hat rhymer either.
“Can you picture my prophecy?
Stress in the city, the cops on top of me
the projects is full of bullets, tho bodies is droppin’ there ain’t no stopping me.
Constantly moving while making millions, witnessing killings, leaving dead bodies in abandoned buildings.
Can’t reach the children cuz they illin’; addicted to killing and the appeal of the cap peeling.
Without feeling, but will they last or be blasted? Hard headed b*stard.
Maybe he’ll listen in his casket?”

No “wordplay” but potent lyrics that mean something, internal rhyme, multi syllable rhyme schemes

There are so many examples of being a lyricist that one barometer isn’t the be all to end all
