How many Asian actors have had prominent roles in films that are guaranteed to be global blockbusters?
Not many, which makes the move to freeze them out of roles in these types of films that should be going to an Asian actor just is uncool.

This is a major blockbuster, it needs the China release and they are going to do everything possible to ensure it. I think this is just facing the reality of the situation, none of us know the exact particulars. This is a major blockbuster, it needs the China release and they are going to do everything possible to ensure it. Making movies is about ROI first, art second and sociology is way down the list somewhere.

I just don't think that casting a well-liked Chinese actor in the Ancient One role would have had a detrimental effect on the Chinese box office for this movie.

Dr. Strange and by extension The Ancient One are D tier or lower Marvel properties. If you changed the race of Bishop or Lucius Fox that's going to receive more press solely off the stature of the characters.

They could've made the character white without being tied to anything Asia

you can't compare it to Bane and Ra's al Ghul, because in those movies they weren't tired to the origins in the comics. Bane was not latin or in a latin prison, and Ra's Al Ghul was just a title, he appeared as an asian first in the movie.
