Marvel Issues Statement On Whitewashing Due To Dr. Strange Film, Twitter Responds (It Backfires)

At the end of the day, its not about the character. It's about some factions wanting to discredit Marvel and find any chink in the armor. Up until now the only 3 knocks on Marvel were

1. Too much fun/comedic relief
2 Mediocre villains.

So far non of that has worked.

The pandering to China is covered in false outrage. And I hate that people think the only way Chinese people will see an American movie is if there is a person of Asian decent featured. That's just dumb. In fact is a discredit to China.

The Daredevil and Fantastic Four movies weren't made by Marvel Studios, they were made by FOX, you can't pin this on them. MCUs Nick Fury is black because he's based off the Ultimate-universe Nick Fury, who's based on Samuel L Jackson, ironically enough.

Not talking about the studios. Talking about the brand. DD and FF are not owned by fox or sony, they are licenced. Meaning Marvel approves their decisions. They also have consultants and can veto changes a studio might make in the interest of protecting the value and image of the liscenced property.

For example, when I worked at Activision we had the licence to Fantastic Four, X-Men, Cap, Spidey etc for the purpose of video games. But we still couldnt autonomously do something like make Captain America's shield square shaped instead of circular or give spiderman a green outfight without getting approval by Marvel. So if the studios are making white characters black or asian or vice versa... somebody still has to sign off on it.

Anyway, they know better. They already did this once when they cast a pale white bytch as Jubilee.

It cost them time and money and the had to scrub an entire tv series they were planning on moving foward with. So Marvel is a habitual line-stepper.

It's crazy how people are only focusing on race and not gender. If it was a white man.. I could understand. But it's a white female. We don't even know the backstory yet. We know nothing. It's way too early to start making assumptions.

Saying what I feel they should've done is no diss to tilda Swinton. She's a great actress and always does her thing. So this isn't me saying she'll be bad in the role. I'm glad whenever she gets work but it's still possible to be critical of something like this man. Like it's not out of the realm to have an issue with it yet still want to see the movie and still hope the movie is dope and hope it all makes sense. I don't see why it's not possible to do that

Yeah, I just read an article on this. Marvel had this Chinese company with ties to the government consult on IM3 so they insured release there. Can we assume they did the same thing here?
The article said if the movie even shows Tibetan culture it would get banned.

Last week I read that the character was first created in the comics with a lot of racist tones and they didn't to put that in a movie. Guess it's too hard to just create a well done asian character?

Dr. Strange and by extension The Ancient One are D tier or lower Marvel properties. If you changed the race of Bishop or Lucius Fox that's going to receive more press solely off the stature of the characters.

I'm too used to Hollywood whitewashing characters to give a fukk I'm just glad they had a black actor play T'Challa in the new cap movie.. and not some white dude with facepaint or some super lightskin breh (T'Challa was mad crazy epic in the film )

Hopefully Cumberbatch's performance will help me ignore the fact that a cac is playing a Tibetan
