The most basic thing anyone who wants to learn how to defend themself should do is at least learn how to block/counter/dodge haymakers and control distance. Also, keep your hands up. How many people get ko'd because they stood there not even facing their opponent while dude tees off on their head. How many cats get ko'd because of wild looping haymakers that could have been ducked/slipped. These basics alone will save you alot of embarrassment and injury.

Realest shyt ever right here. When I first took up MMA training, the head trainer even told us that the "comb the hair block"(where you bend your elbow and raise it to where your hand is by the back of your head as if your combing your hair, and your arm tight against your head/neck area, used to block hooks and lateral strikes) is what will save your ass in most street fight situations because it'll just be a matter of blocking haymakers until they gas out....then it's an easy lunch. :shaq:

I haven't trained any of it myself but I've heard it's really good for situations involving weapons like knives, sticks, etc.

The Silat knife disarms look completely different live then against a compliant opponent. By completely different i mean desparate. Grab the top of the wrist, pressing fingers into wrist bones and punching the face then the back of the hand.

Check out videos by this cat Luke Halloway. Hes got some good stuff but i imagine you have to practice this against a live opponent, insanely to be able to actually do these techniques against someone with a blade who is not built like pee wee herman.

thoughts on kick boxing? will it train me to be a beast like muay thai and boxing?

i havent seen kick boxing mentioned yet and was thinking about signing up for a gym about 1 mile from me. they charge somewhere between 30-50$ a month.

my alternative is a boxing and muay thai gym about 15 miles from me and they charge 1050$ for a year plan. this gym is more competitive and has the classes im interested in. i need some opinions brehs:noah:

What do you want to get out of it for street fighting? If you just want to get in shape and have some fun go with the cheap class. If you want to want to be become better then the average human being go take boxing. Especially if the gym is legit. Do not take cardio classes for any martial art if you really want to learn how to fight. If theres a boxing gym from a legit trainer for cheaper but not as well known, id do that, to find that middle ground.

THIS!

Back when Red Brick gym was open down here I got SO much knowledge from the old heads man. They wouldn't even let us touch a heavy or speed bag until our footwork was perfect. I was :to: the day they closed that gym, it kept me out of a lot of trouble as a teen and in good shape.

1 day a week for feeling like you're a bad ass (you wont be)

2 days a week for very slow improvement. Eventualy you hit a wall once you learn the basics

3 days for gradual improvement

4-6 days for becoming more then regular man.

Met with my teacher yesterday, learned my first xingyi animal(Dragon) and completed my linking fists stuff. Sparred with him using only those. surprisingly fun.

It's an umbrella term for a bunch of different looking arts.

silat is an interesting one. There are actually a lot more people lookin for it these days. It's a sort of syncretic martial art that incorporates elements from many different martial arts. It uses all sorts of weapons and methods of attack.

One thing I gotta say about silat is that some of its methods are perhaps the most vicious or brutal ive seen. There isnt really a morality or unfair strike in silat. Everything is fair game, even shyt like biting.

It falls prey to a lot of the same pitfalls as kung fu can. i have teh deaaadliest martial art!!11!!11 being an example. There are also a lot of schools that overemphasize form work and honestly a little too much esoteric shyt. However, it is interesting. I'd love to see more of it.
