Let me tell you something, any rapper in MY top 10 has been in the game at a mainstream level LEAST 15 years and has had to have made their mark in the game. Lupe has been in it, what around 5 or 6? I don't use mixtapes as a criteria for a great rapper as good as they may be, because mixtapes are not bound by the same constrictions studio albums are. If Lupe is in your top 10 that's fine and I wouldn't argue that. But let's be honest there is a gap between quality albums and classics and in my opinion Lupe has one (The Cool). If you are talking critical reception and the consensus of a lot of people, Laser's has damaged this dudes reputation. Furthermore the lack of cognizance this dude has for what came before him is disturbing. How is this dude going to lie through his teeth saying 'Well I didn't really listen to Native Toungues' when he flubbed the lyrics to a Tribe track. Despite the fact his steez is almost based entirely off that vibe. Furthermore, Kanye West has a larger resume than Lupe and warrants more consideration (whether you agree or not) based off my criteria.
I am a Lupe fan but to put him ahead of genre changing pioneers off the strength of dominating a weak era, is a bit premature, in my opinion. His music as good as it is does not stand up to the established classics in the genre and as such has no place in my top 10. Top 25, sure but top 10, you gotta do more than that.
On a side note, I do really like what I've heard from Food and Liquor II.
