Mid gen refreshes are silly to begin with. At least this way it serves a dual purpose. If the hardware is so old it needs a beefier version then go all in and replace it.
Its not old though, its currently the most powerful console on the market *cough*
Them releasing a new console in 2026 doesn’t make 3rd party devs hop over to making games that target their hardware, they will still use the PS5 as the default console platform. Their own games that have been in development for years already (that probably started on the Xbox one at this point) still have to release on the series consoles.
Unlike nintendo and past iterations of PlayStation and xbox, the backwards compatibility and cross-gen nature of these consoles pretty much makes the appeal of a new generation far less impactful as it did before. Its not a clean break from the past models.
If the series s an x are already failing, new hardware won’t solve the problem unless it’s radically different in design. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t line up with the playstation at this point for the reasons mentioned above.
Nintendo recovered because they pretty much threw home consoles in the bushes and went fully into the Handheld market. A market they’ve dominated since the 80’s
