Little Brother: 9th Wonder wasn't the real producer for our albums, Phonte was

Honestly I never foresaw how problematic the "producer" tag in hip hop would become

IMO on both sides.

On one hand making a beat is a part of, and usually the majority of groundwork on the overall production on a record/album.

On the other hand Hip-Hop acting like the ONLY part of production is making a beat is severely misguided.

At this point I don't think we ever gonna see a middle ground on the definition.
In this thread alone you see so many cats stubbornly bound to the hip-hop idea of a producer. But it really is more than just making a beat. Quincy Jones ain't play one instrument or write any melodies on Off The Wall or Thriller but he produced the records, didn't he?

That being said UpAndComing was definitely clickbaiting and misrepresenting the video

wait a second, what the fukk does this mean then :dead:
Producing a record involves way more than just making the beat.

Arrangements (bridge, chorus, verses)
Instrument assignments (if applicable)
Who should be performing what parts
Cadence (how they say specific things)
The overall topic of the record

Makes sense. 9th still the gawd tho.

a producer brings the resources together into a context, a la quincy jones or dr dre. or movie producers
its why jayz's threat or rapsody or the blackmoon stuff 9th did dont sound like LB. no phonte
and FE doesnt neither. no 9th
and thats fine. like somebody back there said, who cares really

I’m a huge Little Brother fan. Love each member and I’m probably the biggest fan of Phonte. But probably 60% of what made them stand out was 9ths IMMACUALTE beats. 30% was that they rapped about regular nikka shyt and 10% was how creative the albums were. But that’s why 9th was the star out the gate. The first two albums are still their best work hands down.

two things can be true at the same time. while you may be correct about 9th beats standing out, that doesnt mean that Phonte wasnt as much if not more of a producer on those albums. Phonte is a multitalent
And they can go head with that bullshyt :shaq2:

Neither of Phonte's solos are better than LB albums but he was the big brain behind it now? :comeon:

Bullshyt logic. Horrible smh. Was Rakim sólo better than any of his stuff with Eric B even though Eric didn’t do shyt??? Alright then. Pooh makes better solo projects than Phonte. Doesn’t mean Phonte isn’t the most talented of the group, just that his projects are not something everyone can get behind totally even as an LB fan because he dabbles a bit. I know y’all love 9th with a passion but LB has always been dope with or without him.

That’s not what we refuting. I 100% believe Phonte was the driving force behind the group but to say that to diminish 9ths contribution is silly when it was the beats that made these nikkas stand out. I was there on SOHH back then. Everyone was talking about 9ths production and how amazing it was he was using Fruit Loops and not a beat machine.

Phonte didn’t start to set himself apart until Foreign Exchange imo. And I think Pooh is just now starting to get his props and not just the Talib to Phonte’s Mos Def.
Pooh said Phonte was the "main producer" when it came to ideas, concepts, and structuring songs, I don't read into that as them kicking in 9th's back like the coli is portraying it as. Phonte is listed as the executive producer for Sy Smith's upcoming R&B album, he's been listed as the co-executive producer on Zo's last 3 solo albums, he was the executive producer on Bemyfiasco's album, he was the executive producer for Lyric Jones's album, he executive produced at least one of Darien Brockington's albums, I'm confused as to why it's a hard concept to believe that he wasn't the "main producer" under Pooh's definition for LB when they were a trio. Whenever this subject comes up the coli(not saying you) likes to act like him and Pooh were two nikkas who didn't know shyt about making records that 9th bumped into at a community center on campus.

nikkas been sneak dissing for a while man idk what it is. Definitely bigger than music. Sad at the same state cause this guys man some good much together.

Why is it a sneak diss? nikkas just finding out Rakim and Q-Tip just produced all those group albums in the past few years yet they weren’t sneak disses. Pooh telling his truth. You think he lying?

Honestly, as much as I love the OG LB albums and Foreign Exchange. I can't stand those nikkas as people. They act like they're above nikkas than got the fame and recognition, but it's obvious they're jealous and salty as fukk. It's corny. They hate people for not being bigger fans of them.

I don’t think they are jealous but 9th overshadowed them because of his accolades so much that people credit him with making the other two like it was his group and they wouldn’t be shyt without him. Ridiculous.

I think the issue here is over one word. “Main”

Had Pooh said Phonte was the co producer posters wouldn’t be so up in arms about it. They are taking what Pooh said as him saying 9th wasn’t shyt and that’s definitely not what he is saying.

It's been apparent too.

Go past the beat and actually listen to what they're saying. Song is whiny as fukk in retrospect.

Or when they got absolutely no response at some BET concert, opening up for who I believe was prime Jeezy, then going on the internet immediately after copping pleas talmbout "we don't suck, the fans do"

Not enough was directed at NC radio in particular who was never on board with LB and never supported. The song isn’t being unfair or complaining about much on a national level.

It's because they're just not that likeable. I've never really heard anyone in the industry say they fukk with them like that. They're not even a "rapper's rapper" status.
