In the music hierarchy, a beatmaker is below a Producer
A beatmaker is the ones who makes the beats
A Producer is the one who is in charge of the entire song structure, rearranging, and may even be the ones who also pick the sample

correct, in simple terms....a beatmaker is the programmer

I don't understand that analogy. Puff is neither a beatmaker or a producer

And Easy Mo Bee is both a beatmaker and Producer

Ol Dirty b*stard isn't either. His presence on his classics is more important to me than any other job in the process.

Whoever made the beat is my second most respected member of the team.

The "producer" (assuming he is not the beat maker and is doing a different job). Is somewhat in there for me.. but a distant third.

The studio engineer is an important figure. I think Dr Dre is likely a mastermind engineer. At least from how I understand the concept. And that's important. The details of his sound are key to the overall outcome.

Rap. Make the beat. Engineer the session.

That's pretty much all the important parts. Whatever "producing" is outside of those things, it doesn't mean as much as the rest.

But that's what I'm saying: what is a "producer" if not beat maker and engineer. A director?

Says that 9th Wonder was only the beatmaker, and not even for every song. And Phonte was the head Producer. Interesting :jbhmm:

So why the hell does 9th Wonder get all the credit for these albums then?

I’m a huge Little Brother fan. Love each member and I’m probably the biggest fan of Phonte. But probably 60% of what made them stand out was 9ths IMMACUALTE beats. 30% was that they rapped about regular nikka shyt and 10% was how creative the albums were. But that’s why 9th was the star out the gate. The first two albums are still their best work hands down.

I think only people who want gossip & beef found anything in what was said.

9th made the beats and Te' was the ORCHESTRATOR as far as the overall concept/ subject matter of the songs and direction of the overall albums.

thank you. lol. another reference is Cool V said he was coming up with a lot of the samples for Biz and someone later told him thats producing and he should have gotten co-producer credit. he didnt make the beat, but coming up with the sample was just as important back then. Rakim was a full producer on his albums with Eric B. He programmed, picked samples, played drums, etc....he may have needed help at times from Large Pro. which remember when Eric B and Large Pro had beef? Paul C was working on Let the Rhythm Hit Em before he passed and Ra brought in Large Pro to help finish the album. Large said Eric B was NOT around and before the album was turned in, he came to the stu and "remixed" it and claimed production credit...while Large who did all of the programming and co-production got ZERO credit.

And they can go head with that bullshyt :shaq2:

Neither of Phonte's solos are better than LB albums but he was the big brain behind it now? :comeon:

A beatmaker is the ones who makes the beats
A Producer is the one who is in charge of the entire song structure, rearranging, and may even be the ones who also pick the sample

Quite fascinating that producers have convinced people to buy this bullshyt :ehh:

The beat maker is the talent. The beat maker can do everything a producer can. The beat maker can and majority out the time IS the producer..: seamlessly. The “producer” the way it’s used in hip hop (more on that in a second) and as the case here, couldn’t make a beat to save his life

So while it is a talent to have the ear to say ‘no sing this that way’, it does not supersede the beat maker. Not even close

But about hip hop. Sadly, this differentiation of beatmaker vs producer is a hip hop thing. Hip hop has a nasty stench of getting other people to do shyt for you that you should do yourself. You don’t hear R Kelly or Raphael Saadiq or Deangelo sayin ‘oh nah I made the beat but I got somebody else to produce it’. It’s bullshyt. And 95% of the time if it happens, there’s some type of fukkery around it.

Puff & Hitmen- fukkery surrounds it
Post Late registration Kanye- fukkery surrounds it
Timbo and his camp of ghostproducers- fukkery surrounds it
And now Little Brother- fukkery surrounds it

It’s a political delineation more than a musical one. One that big name ‘producers’ have convinced people to think is a real thing bc it benefits them

Why are you putting a made up title in all caps :mjtf:

There’s no such thing as an oRchEstRatOr in rap

He was the rapper. Coming up with a hook does not make you a producer. These nggas itemizing. It’s like these new age chicks who on some ‘well technically I’m a chef bc I make food, technically I’m a maid since I cleaned up today….’ :beli:

Again there is no coincidence that every time this comes up it’s regarding a situation of fukkery. These nggas gettin petty. If you wannabe technical, every rapper who has ever intuitively changed a song or ad-libbed or riffed etc he has just produced. He is a “producer”. As a lifelong LB fan it’s a bad look for them to go the technical route and be this petty
