Let's actually have a hip-hop conversation for once... Does anybody else have "IWW > Illmatic"?

nikka Rakim was doin the same shyt. Missing shows. Taking the money and runnin. Showing up late. He's a cultural artist as well. nikka still sold his records off his classic. And still leaves his crib when he's supposed to already be at the show. Till this day.

I'm not. I'm sayin the fans and the publications are just as much to blame as he is. Yet try to shyt on him like its all his fault. Literally the only artist at the time who gets criticized for tryna bridge the gap. If he got the support he was supposed to for being a "cultural" artist. Than he wouldn't have thought the way he did at the time. All nikkas did was talk. While actually giving their support to the next more commercial nikka.

What'chu mean,....
Nas never showed up to his shows to perform, during illmatic.
That is why he was broke.

Exactly. A bunch of grown ass men put pressure on and idolized a 19 year old kid and tried to pin their own expectations of what they wanted him to be off on him. All Nas had to show for Illmatic was 5 mics. nikkas bootlegged the album and didn't buy it. And the very magazine that gave him 5 mics gave all the accolades to the more commercial artist when it counted the most. nikka didn't get the support he needed to keep goin in that direction from the very same people who criticized him for straying away from it. People wanted to have their cake and eat it too. Meanwhile Nas was still broke in Queens with a crazy baby mama and a newborn.

A considerable amount of "real hip hop" fans are hypocrites who prefer dumbed down music.

nikkas won't support the real when it counts, dikkride what's hot, then criticize same rapper who switched it up for money and accolades. Let's not forget that Biggie got more accolades overall at that time than Nas. That's the fukked up part, considering that Illmatic is lyrically and intellectually superior to Ready to Die

Why wouldn't Nas decide to switch it up?

All that means is Biggie sold out right from the gate.

Biggie started in mca and all mca artist were sellout ol school styled artist in general.
So, of course big was called out for this all the way back then.
You would have to be a noob to not know big was a sellout guy from jump.
It is a reason on one more chance you see heavy d as the first recognizeable draw in the vid.
It was a passing of the torch and braintrust from one of mca's largest drawing envelope sales cycles.
Which also featured puff as its high selling high strung lack of good faith a&r.
Who was fired, by Andre Harrell.
for taking certain liberties, and having a toxic work attitude.
Including, details still not fully disclosed to authenticate why ouff was fired from mca.
Big is the next flagship attempt artist..after, puff pitched a distribution deal to clive davis/arista.
So, big was always known as the violent heavy d replacement next Gen mca guy.

Big was always going to be making heavy d commercial attempts.
with harder edge based content instead of me lover style rhymes.
Big was never accepted as this fully vouched for cultural artist.

Illmatic = better lyrically

It Was Written = better production.

side note* I wrote a grad school essay about the metaphorical significance of "I Gave You Power". It was over 18 pages long.
you lost.

Rakim was doin the same shyt. And still sold. And during a time when rappers wasn't sellin.

Nas,.still had no excuse.
The same excuses you trying to construct for nas jn your psychosis and pass system.
Every noob nas fan who had iww as gateway erroneously tries to set.
