A little correction should be done about the numbers of french-speaking people : 67.8M is more or less the French population but french-speaking people are way more than just the French, it's also Belgium and all of the countries from the ex-colonial empire. The Francophonie (french-speaking population) is more like 200M+ people.

In addition, 30% of the people in China don't speak Mandarin. Many of the 70% of Chinese who do speak Mandarin, don't speak it well. Modern Standard Arabic is a literary language used in professional settings. Everyday conversation is in a local Arabic dialect. Perhaps only half of "Arabic" speakers can speak MSA.

The Defense Language Institute offer free resources for independent language learners. It is called GLOSS (Global Language Online Support System).

https://gloss.dliflc.edu/Default.aspx

Simply pick a language and a level. If you click the title of the lesson you will be led to an exercise. If you click the blue floppy disk, you will be given audio of a dialogue and a bilingual transcript which you can download.

I'm taking up some Japanese. I've always been fascinated with it.

I just finished studying like 30 kanji. Gonna do this everyday plus I already enjoy listening to some japanese music(mainly from the Persona videogame series).

Learning Spanish, Taking a class in college next semester, level four, I took Spanish in Spain for a month, but I tested into the level 5 class, so ima take 4 just to make sure I didn't miss anything, and also because a month isnt much time to cram a semester worth on a language in, and also in my experience the teachers/content are pretty easy going when it comes to these summer programs.

As far as tips (didnt read the thread yet) I would download duolingo and do that in your spare time instead of playing any phone games, and also look up pimsleur and/or michel thomas. They are like audio tapes kind of, i've never used them but my brother who has 3 kids and works full time did when I downloaded it for him, and he has progressed really fast.

The main thing would be to practice with people whenever you can, maybe we should do skype or tiny chats to practice with each other sometimes.

I would recommend those serious about learning languages to check out a site called mylanguageexchange.com. It's a site where you can meet people from all around the world for purposes of exchanging languages. The site is free to sign up and view profiles but you can only send "hi's" to other members. Essentially it's like you can "dap" other members so to speak. For you to actually be able to type out messages on there, you need to be a gold member($6/month). Gold members can send written messages to anyone and a regular member can respond back and communicate as normal.

I signed up to find native japanese speakers from Japan and you can filter searches by age, gender and location. I already befriended two Japanese girls(one 22 and one 24) on there and it's really great having someone you can personally talk to. We exchanged information and now they're often texting me and chatting with me via Skype or other apps pretty much daily. It's such an invaluable tool that I would recommend for serious language learners.

It's also a good way to get your international free agents ready :win:.

Update:
It's been a couple months since I've started learning Japanese. I've finished going through the 2042 Kanji in the Remembering the Kanji Book.
I'm still talking to the girl in my previous post pretty much daily and I should be going to Japan next month :shaq:

If you're not interested in a language or it's culture then you won't really stick with it because I tried to learn Spanish a few years ago but I just did it on some "Okay it's time to do some spanish.. meh.." whereas with 日本語 it's pretty much the norm to be involved with something that's Japanese. I've been sticking with 日本語 daily and incorporate into my day as much as possible and it has paid in dividends.

I've learned the Hiragana and Katakana system and now I'm practicing reading sentences while still doing massive input. I can pretty much read Hiragana/Katakana words with ease.

It helps again if you're interested so that everything that I'm doing doesn't feel like I'm learning. I put my PC OS in 日本語, as well as my phone and most of the games I play. It seems extreme but it reinforces what you learn everyday and it becomes normal. I wouldn't say I'm anywhere near fluency but I'm much farther along today than I was a month or two ago.

Cosign i copped rosetta stone off groupon to learn. I feel like you're at a disadvantage if you're in present day america and don't know Spanish

Plus the women:shaq:

For right now I'm just gonna do it for free... Like I said I have the advantage of having a spanish speaking aunt.:banderas:

For right now I just want to start slow and start with the very basics and pronouncing words. I don't care for writing(yet).

But yeah the women is one of the reasons...:shaq: A VERY big advantage...:banderas:
