Switch just set a US sales record but people are talking about consoles are over. Miss me with the hybrid talk it's still a console. Hardware will sell for people who want to play in their living room, and there's still enough 1st party between Nintendo and Sony to justify consoles existing going forward.

And again as Microsoft exits the hardware space there will be a 3rd party hole that PS6 can occupy for non-PC gamers.

Yes switch is very successful.

Nintendo killed an 80+ million console market to get there tho, and it’s yet to be seen if switch 2 will match the success of the OG.

Thats kinda the premise of this thread, you can point out who “won” but there’s been huge compromises and concessions, even for the “winnners” as the market changes from what it used to be.

No, it's a hybrid, primarily portable.

A non portable Nintendo console has only broken 100 million in sales ONCE. And that was the Wii fad.

All of their other consoles (NES, SNES, 64, Gamecube, Wii U) have never done over 62 million in sales and that was the OG NES/Famicon.

Wii U - 14 million :scust:
Gamecube - 22 million :scust:

N64 - 33 million :francis:

SNES - 49 million

They are the portable kings. A pure console non handheld from them does not move those units. And they never have.

Their console numbers have decreased every single gen outside of the Wii which was a CLEAR outlier.

It's still an innovation that helped them recover from the Wii U gen and moved them major units even with them merging their handheld sales. We'll see what happens with the Switch 2.

My point is the industry wont completely move away from consoles because the use case is still strong. There's a learning curve with PC that scares off the average consumer.

Off the top of my head.

PS2 sold 160m
PS3 sold 87m
PS4 sold 118m
PS5 sold 60-75m (estimated) so far.

Let's look at Xbox.

Looks like a clear trend of everybody selling less consoles overtime.

But again, some of you don’t want to admit it :manny:

Xbox has been trending down. I posit that there are roughly 160-180m console users. And they move between consoles.

I think I see the trend from the PS2 to PS3 where users migrated to Xbox. With the X One launch, console users went back to Sony. In this era PS5 is outselling the Xbox even more than last gen.

Considering that for the first 2 years you could easily get a Series S and couldn't get a PS5, I expect the PS5 into sell 120m
