Chrisette Michelle is awesome to me. She isn't trying to fit in to a box for success. I've seen her live and it's worth it. She writes about real relationship stuff. I know she isn't new but she's the truth.

You know how hard R&B has fallen off... I mean, really, really fallen off?

Artists who actually make good music, simply by not sucking, are treated like anomalies now. Whenever you hear somebody bring up the existing good R&B artists out there, it's almost ALWAYS the same artists, cause that's how much they stand out from everything else out there. I grew up in the 80s/90s... and always also heard 60s/70s thru my moms... I'd say the last 10 years of R&B has been depressing.

And even in that, there's artists who are talented but make weak music. If talent alone = good music, Alicia Keys wouldn't be garbage right now.

Chuuch.

I 'member when Alicia Keys came out with that first album (which was aight, no shade) and folk were suckin' her off because she could play the piano.

I see y'all saying the love, live elements, and songwriting is what's wrong...but it's deeper than that.

There is no feeling in it.

The R in R&B tells you that the rhythm is important.
The B in R&B tells you the feeling is important.

You don't have to make a serious, brooding, sappy song for it to be real R&B - you just have to
feel something, and put a rhythm to that feeling. It's gonna sound good if you can convey that feeling.

Like this.

Props on bringing up Tony Toni Tone. Perfect example of the diverse R&B, we 90s kids grew up

on. This Crack Baby Generation couldn't fathom songs like Anniversary, Slow Wine, Whatever

You Want, Get Down, Lay Your Head On My Pillow, Ask Of You, etc. We were children listening

to these adult-oriented, but non vulgar love songs. What does the kids have to listen to now "fukking, fukking, fukking, and Suck dikk for some Truckfit"...it's all so demonic friends:birdman:

Had a talk with my older brother about old R&B and he kinda summed it up for me..The dynamics of a relationship from the courting, to the ups and downs in a committed relationship is something that does not resonate with teenagers and young adults because most have no clue what they are talking about at that age..hence the rap lyrics posing as R&B lyrics. My brother noticed that the songs he likes have almost nothing to do with how/why he would fvck a woman but how the love/romance between them impacted his and her life..i feel that if you have to be explicit and focus on the shallow end of the pool, you have no place talking about love/romance/relationships...grow up first..
bruh, some of these cats are old enough to make a real song. i look at these dudes like tee flii, ty dolla, even trey and breezy - cats put out the most shallow, hard on hoes, sexually explicit music. alicia keys, mary j b, r kelly, maxwell, d angelo...all of them had songs that ran the gamut of love, relationships, and so much more written under the age of 25, monica, tevin campbell, brandy, all had timeless songs (may have been written by others) in their teenage years. and we can go back to the 50's-80's and see the same pattern. this is truly a loveless generation, they're too concerned about instagram likes and keeping up appearances, i don't know how/when/why black love got bodied like it has, but it doesn't exist in music nor tv
