My theory is the art of songwriting has been lost in R&B. It is all about sounding cool and not writing and/or singing the best song possible.

you're partially right. Explicitness went too FAR. The art of songwriting about something like sex is to write it in a coy way. Basically, say it without saying it. Part of that was because society wasn't ready for bluntness, but it made the songs more creative.

Teddy Pendergrass, Marvin Gaye, even an (edgy for their time) early R. Kelly, Jodeci. They could all say it without saying too much.

Speaking of Kels, look at something like, "Your Body's Calling" We know it's about sex, but hell, as a kid I could sing it and not get in trouble. Now even he's had to adjust and doing songs called, "Marry the P___y" It's still dope song, :whew: but that's beside the point. LOL

Point is, now you can make an R&B song called, "I Just Wanna F*ck", and just say that over and over and it's acceptable :snoop:

r&b hasn't just "fallen off", it's dead already. it's been that way for long time. while most were sayin' hip hop was dead, it was r&b in a far worst state than hip hop. so called "r&b singers" of today are missin' what it's all about. it's about the love. they missin' love and soul in their sound

the so called "r&b" music of today doesn't even begin to compare to the "benchwarmers" of the 90's. that's a testament to just how great r&b music was in the 90's and how horrible it (whatever it's considered these days) and or non existent (in my opinion) r&b music is today

since we talkin' bout "bench warmers" of the 90's as well as early 00's, the r&b female group allure, who were signed to mariah's label back in the 90's, song "head over hills" is 20 times better than anythin' out right now by any female singer(s) :whew:
they even had a nas feature :wow:
(you can hear mariah singin' in the background :blessed:)

oh yeah, billy lawrence was better than these female singers of today too; she even had mc lyte featured on this song :mjcry:

yeah, r&b music been gone, loooooooooong gone

Had a talk with my older brother about old R&B and he kinda summed it up for me..The dynamics of a relationship from the courting, to the ups and downs in a committed relationship is something that does not resonate with teenagers and young adults because most have no clue what they are talking about at that age..hence the rap lyrics posing as R&B lyrics. My brother noticed that the songs he likes have almost nothing to do with how/why he would fvck a woman but how the love/romance between them impacted his and her life..i feel that if you have to be explicit and focus on the shallow end of the pool, you have no place talking about love/romance/relationships...grow up first..
