I would always draw a comparison between his decision to go avant-garde on TPAB after the commercial success and expectations that came from GKMC with that of Nirvanas choice to do the same on InUtero after Nevermind... That to me is always the mark of a high value artist...the willingness to Zag...wish some of these other mainstream nikkas would have the courage to do the same...the music industry would produce so much more quality and timeless work

I remember him saying he told Jay that he wanted to do something different and Jay told him that his second time was the best moment to do it

Nas did the same after Stillmatic with Gods Son and then doubled down with Streets Disciple.

Common of course with Electric Circus

You COULD argue Kanye with Yeezus after MBDTF (even though Yeezus has zero redeeming qualities)

Outkast (mainly Andre) with Speakerboxxx/Love Below

J.Cole with 4 Your Eyez Only

Album really grew on me, it is his worst but it is still great.

Silent Hills
Savior
N95
Count Me Out
Rich Spirit

Been replayed heavy, I appreciate the artistry and message but sonically the others just dont got great replay value
Agreed that it's not touching GKMC, TPAB or S.80...but eh, I think I'm ranking it above DAMN. That album didn't do shyt for me. Aside from "Element" and "Duckworth".

Kodak did his thing on Silent Hill. That is one of the smoothest verses I have heard in a minute, hella wavy just effortless. I went from like a C+ on this album to like a solid B. The cuts you figured would be something you play over and over again are hella lowkey but still have a light playful/party time energy to them. cant describe it. I still think Vince Staples self titled album is my AOTY 2022 so far but Kendrick is fasho in the top 3.
vince staples album was called ramona park in the dark

his self titled album came out last year

Lol at "you could argue Kanye". nikka Ye is really the only right answer. nikkas still crying for more chipmunk soul but he won't give it to them and is still one of the top three selling artists in hip hop after a 20+ year career.

Good comparison
As a matter of fact InUtero is a better album than Nevermind

I would say that bigger Nas comp is when he did It Was Written after the “holy grail” hip hop blueprint album iLLmatic... That's the type of shyt I appreciate and while nikkas will get mad at you in the beginning those records end up standing the test of time

The other comps eecially kast and ye are solid except for common lol...you gotta actually execute it well for the shyt to work :mjlol:

It really is because you (for lack of better words) train your audience to be prepared for anything...early ...which gives you way more freedom as an artist along the path of your career instead of being trapped into one soundscape... Like for example after outkast dropped Atliens and it worked following the critically acclaimed first album you couldn't tell them nikkas nothing musically ... Their audience allowed them to experiment and it was almost expected from that fanbase... Yeah they may have lost a few day ones but ultimately the music was enriched
