I'd go as far as to say gkmc ranks last in his discography and thats not direspect to the album, its phenomenal...but kendrick's discog is no joke. After gkmc he really started to understand music.

I can’t understand how anyone thinks GKMC is better than TPAB. They aren’t even in the same league to me.
I don't understand that take either. TPAB isn't just a triumph for rap, but music generally. I get that GKMC might be more digestible in some respects but TPAB ticked every damn box...timely, clever, cohesive, emotional, genre-bending. Like on some S.Wonder Innervisions type shyt (at least for me). Haha I remember running Hood Politics back just to hear what I thought was a subtle use of a vibraphone...little shyt like that is why I love that album.

I mean, tpab is one of the most decorated and praised albums for a reason..musical composition is flawless. you'll never see any other rap album being praised for its musical composition like that. The minority of people holding gkmc over tpab usually aren't educated on music like that. It sounds arrogant but it is the truth. Have you heard the blue notes on gkmc? shyt is fukked up, all over the place, the syncopation is just as bad.

liking gkmc more is fine, but it is in no way or shape a better album than tpab. Just listen to more music.

Tpab is up there with the best albums from Prince, Nina Simone, etc whereas gkmc is just up there with the best rap albums. That's not the same league at all.

From artists to critics to listeners, everybody praises the shyt out of To Pimp A Butterfly whereas gkmc is only praised by hip hop fans.
To pimp a butterfly is a bigger accomplishment, and quit efrankly it's also objectively much better. like there's no argument to be made in favor of gkmc against tpab.

It's all preference at the end of the day. I prefer GKMC mostly because I just love how vivid and cinematic that album is, it really feels like you're in the passenger seat next to Kendrick. A+ storytelling. Plus the production aged very well IMO outside of Real which is a good song besides the so-so beat.

And no ThirdAct, this is not "all preference", not at all. there's a difference between what one enjoys and what is good/bad.

Tpab is up there with the best albums from Prince, Nina Simone, etc whereas gkmc is just up there with the best rap albums. That's not the same league at all. And I agree that gkmc has way too many flaws from a musical aspect...something rap fans might not understand as they mostly listen to rap. Same demographic that don't understand why hip hop albums are never ranked as high as albums from other genres. Reality is they're not on the same level.

Its more of a "rap" album. Way more digestible and easier to listen to

This isn't towards you or your point at all but I want to address the digestible word because it grinds my gears. But digestible to who? I think that's only meant to say that it has crossover appeal and as a nuanced listener I think we couldn't care less about crossover appeal, hell the Coli put KD2 to like 150 pages lmao because it's that dope.

Only he and that monster of a team he has behind him could do what he's doing on a grand scale. I'm glad he hasn't tried to recreate To Pimp A Butterfly or anyone else for that matter because something that good in that vein can only happen once. Hes is kind of our Stevie Wonder in that regard.

Digestible to the common listener and, for lack of a better term, shallow rap fans. There's more typical rap beats and rapping on it, 16-hook-16 songs, more rap features than any other kendrick album, it has the drake stimulus package, so on and so forth. The narrative on the album is enough of a swerve to keep it from sounding too basic, and there's a few moments that are ahead of their time like Sing About Me (now kendrick makes those kinds of songs on the regular.)

TPAB takes you really wanting to sit down and understand the meaning of it and appreciate more than just rap music to grasp it. You can't just put songs of it in a shuffle with other rap songs and expect it not to standout other than Alright.

Everyone considers TPAB as the much better album...gkmc is great though

but it's a rap forum, and gkmc is an easier album to listen to for simpletons that don't have a musical background or that only listen to rap. With that being said, even on hip hop forums tpab is usually widely regarded as the better body of work.

:gucci:. Its really not that deep. I love TPAB. However I skip songs on there. GKMC might have one skip at the most. Has nothing to do with being only a rap fan. I listen to all kinds of music. It has nothing to do with it. As I said before the best songs from TPAB might be better but as an overall body of work GKMC is his best

I can’t fathom how there’s reviews being completed already for this album when it hasn’t been out for a full day yet. I know it’s gonna take repeated listens for me to dissect it all. It’s a very dense album. I love experimental type of music so this is up my alley..I think he does a good job of making it accessible as possible without straddling into Lupe territory (and that’s not a knock on Lupe at all).

I’m gonna wait for atleast another week before dropping a review but so far I like what I’m hearing.
