The Cool sold just as well as Lasers did overall. It went gold in a matter of months, sitting around 900k in sales today, has a platinum single on it, and got lots of radio play.

The label just wanted a piece of all his earnings and tried to muscle him into a 360, hence why there is a 3+ year delay between The Cool and Lasers.

Let’s not act like Lasers is the album Lupe had to make to be successful. Atlantic botched his shyt.

The only reason why The Cool and Lasers did the same just albums wise is because Lasers came out during the itunes/singles era. His singles on Lasers did much better than his previous singles. He actually made more money. That is why he became Ferrari Lu, he specifically stated he made enough off Lasers to go out and buy Ferraris.

I never said Lasers made him successful. I am saying that he felt 'forced' to make certain records because naturally, he doesn't make the best records because his ear for beats is meh. I agree 1000% with @West Coast Avenger on it. When the label helped him pick better beats and work on songs he didn't initially want to, it worked out well for everyone.

Of course Atlantic wants a piece, this is a business guys.

I disagree wholeheartedly. "deck has never really taken lyricism to the places lu does"? Is you mad? Deck has verses that Lupe couldn't dream of crafting because he overdoes it. He's too full of himself to put put together a Triumph verse or a verse from It's Yourz. He sloppily overcompensates because of his lack of true MC skills. lupe uses way more literary techniques than deck. doesnt make it better or worse, but dude is doing MORE than deck ever did so one could say that yes, lupe is more advanced. lu has variety in his music deck will never have as much as i love dude. this is just a fact as most of decks catalog circles the same 4-5 subjects. variety is the spice of life. if deck had more variety he would be seen as a bigger solo artist than he is, yet hes seen as a team player when he prolly drops teh best verses on every wu release. i think in 2018 its pretty much a fact that deck is not the top mc solo wise from wu or even in the top half. meth, rae, ghost, odb, rza, gza and cap all had better solo careers for a reason. deck lacked the intangibles to be a single star.

and you know im the biggest wu stan here dude but cmon now. the only deck that can go up against lupe is wutangforever deck. imo deck and nas are almost the same rapper .. but nas took it pLaces deck never did. nas does shyt like lu like writing songs backwards or using different rhying techniques.

why yall saying lu doing those weird songs means nothing but thats a reason why nas is still one of the goats. he takes risks, which i appreciate.

deck is good for a DOPE street 16 bar verse. everytime. but guys like nas and lu will take it way passed a 16 into something incredibly deep. deck never wrote a story as good as the cool or undying love, but id say he could match both guys 16 to 16. actually, he prolly has... but lu and nas got like 5x as many as deck has.

lupe has made more heartfelt songs and i thionk if anyone could match deck with his triumph verse, itd be lu.

does he think he smarter than everyone else... maybe. i dont know his personality like that but i can easily say pretty much EVERY lu album better than decks. if deck was THAT good, hed be able to hold down a solo but i think we all know by now that aint happening

and i love deck dude but ghostface level he is not.rae drops the same typa verse everytime too but raes verses all feel fresh while deck not so much so.

i mean as a wu fan i wanna say i like everyone in wu more than lupe and kendrick but im tryna be realistic... lupe is a dope rapper. prolly THE BEST lyricist of HIS generation and one of the last true lyricists left of the "new" class.
