Yep. nikkas bringing Diddy in this shyt like everybody in the industry knows he's a alcoholic or something. The nikka is a work-aholic and he plays hard. Nobody every accused any of them nikkas on the hard knock life tour of being workaholics. No way Diddy could build an empire like his by being an unfocused drunk. If you followed Diddy 24 hours a day i'd be willing to bet that at least 17 of those hours are spent building an maintaining and empire. 4 may be of him sleeping and 3 may be of him partying. Spend 24 hours with Redman and all you'll get is a contact high.

Never said he wasn't smart. My whole point is that if you sell records in hiphop you should be able to pivot to an exec if your focused. Bone Thugs N Harmony sold hella records but they spent most of their time being the opposite of sober. They was able to be taken advantage of because they wasn't in their right mind. When the mortgage is due im sure them nikkas wish they was focused more.

Don't think the op is in love with jay as much as he's in love with the concept of corporate assimilation in hip hop...jay z just happens to be the poster boy for it...meth and red and everybody were just on tour being dumb worthless rap nikkas, while jay was in the early stages of a glorious transformation into as close to a middle aged wealthy jewish record exec as possible

Maybe, I think it's a whole hang up about smoking/drinking, this thread was preceded by another one in the Locker Room about 'people who say they need a drink are weak minded' a few days ago. Too bad, because he kinda has sort of a point, but it gets lost in this mess, and worst of all, lose out on a hilarious discussion of the comedic masterpiece that was 'Backstage'.

This thread is nothing but a hindsight is 20/20 thread. 'Backstage' came out in 2000 and in that year of 2000 nobody on that tour was a bum. Red & Meth had a movie coming out and a tv show in the works, JaRule was a big time artist, DMX was pretty much neck and neck with Jay as far as sales and popularity, Beans was on fire. That was the Hard Knock Life Tour- there were no bums on that tour....

-Now in 2012, yes we do see who became what and accomplished what once the smoke cleared 12 years later. There's always winners and always casualties. You can't have one without the other. Ying and Yang. Rap is a harsh game. Its not like rock music where you can rock on til you're 60 and still sell albums and sell out arenas into the golden years.

If you listen to Jay's verse on that new joint with Rick Ross and Dre, you realize this dude is way too shallow and quite childish.

I agree he is a positive role model for not doing drugs and a hard work ethic, but he does say on too many occasions that 'Im living proof crime does pay' that shyt is foul and also still talks about being a crack dealer etc.

2 seconds after his child was born he was in the booth probably with no pen and off the dome.

Im just saying dude is no business guru, just a smart man who knows what to do and when to do it. As for innovator or a business template i dont think so, also agree in the backstage tour you good tell he was above the childish shyt.

As a hardwork ethics role model he is great, as a man not so much.

Why are they "unfocused" though? You still did not answer that question. Puff and Russell Simmons are notorious for their uninhibited behavior on tours and at parties yet they both have as much, or more money and success as Jay. You rarely see Puff without a bottle in his hand at his affairs and Russ was fukking wild bytches and getting high off that nose candy for years in his Def Jam touring days. You're equating partying on tour (which you admit your only source in regards to the tour was an edited DVD) with being a failure. Just admit you a jay dikk rider and let it go. Thread fail. Only nikkas co-signing that fukkery is fellow jay dikk riders.

I don't think he's a Jay dikkrider. I think it's more that he (likely) believes he has a similar mentality to Jay...no vices all about business. He sees Jay rising and others "falling" and looks at it like it's some sort of reflection that he's doing things the right way himself. I honestly think the whole argument is more about him than any of the rappers.

No one is stupid enough to criticize Method Man / Redman for portraying the image of being drunks/drug abusers/etc. when they managed to parlay that image into movies, tv shows and other ventures. Are they Jay Z? No. Are they in the upper echelon of rappers when it comes to longevity and $$? Yes.

I will admit though if your focus is to branch out and make moves outside your lane it is more profitable to portray a cleaner brand. Ask Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods. But not all people are down to portray something they aren't just for the sake of chasing paper. Can't hate them for that, and there's room for those types to make money as well.
