I don't buy this. The movie is basically about a man with a mental illness who was physically and emotionally abused his whole life and then finally snaps. Of course the director wanted people to empathize with Arthur. Maybe not look up to him, but he definitely didn't mean to demonize Arthur. He's basically Carrie, without the super powers. This sequel was just utterly pointless from the start.

As @The_Truth said they clearly made a point in the first movie to show and make Arthur a tragic sympathetic character who was the product of a society that failed him as it did not properly look after people with severe mental issues.

He was BRAIN DAMAGED as a result of being ABUSED as a CHILD where he's now a DELUSIONAL and UNDERDEVLOPED adult who eventually COSPLAYS as The Joker. He was basically Lennie from of Mice and Men. But now y'all coming out with this REVISIONIST BULLshyt as if the you were meant to see him as a regular competent "bad" man. That was all due to Zack Snyder. Making those horrible non fun,non kid friendly films. SuperMan Returns I just recall people comparing it to Christopher Reeves movies . Sorta like people did with Amazing Spiderman comparing it to the Raimi films. Not only do people expect these movies to be fun because of Gunn. They will be compared to those mid Zack Snyder movies rather than classics. This is a different time,MCU is dying and have nothing to distract us with. Superman has the worlds undivided attention.
