Ran it back today because of this thread. Great album. Jay always been better working with soulful beats instead of trying to modernize his sound. Can tell he's more comfortable in this zone and it brings out more personal lyrics from him. This and American Gangster by far the best of his post "retirement" albums because of that.
That last verse on Smile
Album was a great cohesive listen. Top 5 Jay album? Nah
DAMN I came in here to give Hov his flowers for floating on Smile. He killed that last verse.
I actually think it could be a bonafide top 5 Jay-Z album.

4:44 is more cohesive than Vol. 1 and Vol.2. Which are his next strongest albums in my opinion

This is a take I definitely fukk with
i felt that way at first but I def think vol.2 is a certified top 5 Jay album. Too many classic Jay songs and for me the quintessential Jay album that balance high quality commercial hits and street anthems.

I agree with both of you in a way. I know Vol. 2 is a very commercial album but I still feel it’s one of his more cohesive albums just on energy alone. I can definitely see 4:44 in the top 5 too. I don’t think there’s a wrong answer.
