It's funny how there seems to be this narrative on here that NBA fans love to tear down legends, as if great players of today aren't ridiculed 1000000x more. Tatum will go down as one of the best wings of his generation, yet when the Celtics have crashed out of the playoffs every season, there's been like 10+ threads shytting on him.

I swear some of y'all live in an alternate reality.

Looking back, I'd have to agree.

While Jason Kidd has accumulated some impressive stats in his career (assists, 3 pointers made), he just didn't move the needle much in terms of facilitating an efficient or high octane offense.

If ever there was an argument for a "stat padder" it might actually be Jason Kidd.

At the time I thought he was really great. But as you gain a better understanding of the game and what correlates to winning, he looks far less impressive.

That said, I think a lot of fans are prisoners of the time. Jason Kidd played at perhaps the last era where a point guard could just focus on assists and do almost nothing else....and still be regarded as good. It's like the defense-only Shortstop in baseball. The Omar Vizquel of the NBA.

You can point to whatever accolades he won. But the fact is, his skills just don't translate well and if we could redo things, he'd be far less awarded than he was.

90% of those passes are on the break against scrambled defenses with lumbering ass bigs struggling to get back.

I can name 10 players with better reels than that.

And that really speaks to his career - he was dope in transition, but just a regular ass player in halfcourt situations. He was heavily flawed and I don't know why folks think they can fool anyone who was actually paying attention back then. It's been said ad nauseum but he benefitted from being in the East at its rock bottom; if he had stayed out West he'd be looked at differently. There certainly wouldn't be any Finals runs for him.

I've made threads before about the east being trash after jordan and Shaq left (until Detroit rose up) , so I'm not propping Kidd up too much bc he went to the Finals. But he does deserve SOME props for that, regardless.

As far as discounting his passing ability and highlights, well name 10 other PGs with better passing reels...matter of fact, just show me 3 players

Plenty other overrated players of the last 30 years before you mention Kidd.
There really isn't.

The replies in this thread are a microcosm of just overrated he is. The majority of the posters in here are speaking about in him glowing terms, when his play was anything but. Nobody has debunked the OP, they've just come in and posted some vague/generic analysis about his game.
