I like J.Cole, however I cant help but feel unimpressed when I hear his music. Can't really put my finger on it, he is missing something.

I based that of J. Cole himself saying that.
I mean Eminem lately, but yeah if he came out with this type of music (recovery and relapse) and no controversy, beef, "shock posting" and everything else he probably wouldn't blow up the same way.

They signed J. Electronica, some dude named Hugo, some whiteboy gangster from London, they are managing hipster artists like santogold, lesbian djs and other people.
Jays plan for Roc Nation was not to make it a popular music powerhouse, but a mix of different artists for different crowds. Operating in most aspects of music from J. Electronica to Samatha Ronson to Shakira to Meek Mill.

Oh well in that case I get what you're saying.
Yeah I agree Lately Eminem hasn't been THAT controversial but during his come back dude definitely was, recently he did have his GaGa punchline for "Bad Meets Evil" that started a little controversy.

Jay and Roc Nation is also trying to find alternative ways to make revenue outside of album sales, probably the reason he partnered with Live Nation.
Very different model for a major compared to what other people are going with.
:eat:'in off those management deals.

Yeah but looking at it career wise, all the controversy, killing bytches, beefs, controversy and shyt was what created Ems career. So nah he's not an exception.

It should be interesting to see how he approaches his career from now on, I feel that he's been feeling himself a bit more after the album like an actual rap star lol.

specially with this joint

From "a lil birdy told me on the low you got an Illmatic nobody touching Nas nikka" to "I'm more biggie"

Corrected that post, I meant to say he hasn't been that controversial lately, but Eminem as we know him is really associated with the word "Controversy" he definitely pushed peoples sensibilities with his music and what he was/is willing to say.
So yeah that's why I think Em is far from an Exception in that regard. lol

I thought the album was piff when it dropped but that only lasted for a couple weeks. I think he'll grow with his upcoming projects though. The standout joints from him album were dope

He'll probably be like Wale. The 2nd album is so important to his placing in the game. "Ambition" had me like :ohhh:

This album needs and Appreciation thread.

I been in Cole's corner for years. He's a dope rapper, and in many ways the Drake v Cole thing reminded me of the Jay v Nas shyt from what I was a young nikka. Like Nas, Cole is the underdog and I had to ride for him.

I loved the mixtapes, and to me FNL was like the culmination of everything - the production, the dope rhymes, etc. It was a beautiful, classic mixtape, and my hype for the album couldn't be contained

...then the album came out and just sounded...empty. Lyrically it wasn't much, the content seemed old, and the beats...what happened? Everything felt so soulless and compressed. I hate to say it, but listening to Take Care and Sideline Story back to back and it's hard not to feel embarrassed for Cole. His shyt doesn't even sound professional by that standard. I'm not talking rap/lyric wise, I'm talking music wise.

Cole needs to hook up with Just Blaze or somebody, anybody who can give him some good drums to rap over. But I fear he's too arrogant to realize he needs help

somewhere between a pair of D cup tiddies
he really has the potential to do some damage but he's got some hoe'ish tendencies.
we've been hearing about how hard he's worked, not gettin a fair shake at life, always bytchin about somethin...
this fakkit went to college when lots of people would die for that chance, bytches about it, has talent as an mc and producer, still bytches, made it to jay and is living his dream.
someone needs to executive produce his album, content, themes (ahem, his whole life) etc for his next album.
he is his worst enemy.

Except Drake, the album was a bit better than Drakes but sold considerably less.
Both 3.5-4 mics.

Probably the worst description of "The Sideline Story" I've ever read.
There are probably at most two tracks that don't fit what I'd expect from a Cole record other than that the whole album is straight J. Cole, it's all the stuff he's touched on and spoken on before except they're album cuts.
That album was definitely for the fans, not the masses, that's more Big Seans lane.

Fair enough. Maybe I didn't describe it right. I guess I just expected more. Maybe rap over more Hii Power beats next time. As far as Sean's album I like Sean but I couldn't listen to it more then once.

I'll agree Sideline Story wasn't seeing his tapes, but pretty much every artist in his class had the same problem. Take Care wasn't seeing So Far Gone, Rolling Papers was seeing Wiz's tapes, Finally Famous wasn't seeing Big Sean's tapes. I'm holding off on K.R.I.T's debut so maybe you guys could let me know if it's seeing his tapes. Cole had a solid debut and did numbers. Nothing to be dissapointed about imo.
