You don't hear IYRTITL Drake in some of these songs?
A lot of the subject matter in these songs overlaps with Drakes usual content about opp talk, can't trust anyone, I'm bigger than everyone, no one fukking with me bars, etc. Cole clearly left the conscious and self righteous preachy shyt behind here.
I'm not mad at it though. I see Cole getting better with time and he absolutely needed to make more fun music like this than his usual stuff.

Bro this man’s improvement is next level. He believes he’s the best and he SOUNDS like it. This is his Nas in 96 moment where he just can’t be fukked with and the more elite the MC the higher he’ll step it up.
He’s the best rapper in the game right now. I love J.Cole but I NEVER thought i’d say that. There was always someone slightly better. I can’t say that anybody outside of Nas is fukking with Cole on the mic and really Nas shouldn’t be included in this convo because he’s a legend.

The issue I and many others used to (or still do) have with Cole is that either his production is lacking or he tries too hard to be “deep/conscious” in the most transparent way that turns people off from his music.
