Complete meh on Walker for 3 years. Have no problem with Cashman walking away from that.

I think I'd be fine with Santana for 1 year at 1B. We need defense there and he's a Gold Glover there. His bat will be more than good enough as well.

Also, Jurickson Profar is a name that intrigues me for LF. He was once one of the top prospects in the game, but had a series of injuries early in his career. In recent years, he seems to have found his footing and health. Fairly decent defensively and at the plate. He's always played 2B. Not sure what his market value is, but intriguing piece that we could use.

This could move Bellinger to 1B and Dominguez to CF. Also, Profar could bat leadoff. Just a thought.

Profar is reportedly seeking a 3 year deal around 15 mil (give or take)

I'd actually be fine with that, as he can legit take over LF and/or rotate to 2B/3B, as well as bat leadoff. Bellinger can play 1B if needed.

Now, we'd have to find a way to dump DJL, or just eat that contract. But Profar could legit solve several lineup problems for us and provide a quality positional flexibility option.

And still keep us in the ballpark for post-2025 potential additions, including the Japanese dude and Tucker.

My only issue with this offseason was Cashman's answer about this after the Fried press conference. Spoke like DJ was a viable option to get some burn at 2B :francis:

He’s gotta take the L on that contract and just not play him ever again. 2024 DJ was the single worst hitter I’d ever seen aside from higgy from opening day through the cubs series in June from 2022 (after the first cubs game he had a .146/.206/.193 triple slash with 5 RBI’s)

Yeah, you can't be a serious team and have DJ LeMahieu as your starting 2B in 2025.

There's not a good 2B on the free agent market either.

Do you really want to play Ha-Seong Kim? It doesn't excite me, I'll say that. He's a worse version of Luis Arraez (who I actually would like to have).
The funny thing is, Arraez is a free agent next winter so the Padres have some incentive to trade him.

As much as I dislike it, trading for Yandy to play 3B and moving Chisholm to 2B might be the direction the Yankees take.
In theory, they let Yandy walk next winter, sign Murakami...but that still leaves 2B unresolved.

Plus, I think at some point in 2025 it's going to be painfully apparent that Volpe is not the long term answer at SS and the Yankees will have to hope someone in the farm system becomes the future there. Roderick Arias? He's got a lot to prove.

There aren't any good SS that will come on the market any time soon. They had their chance when Turner, Correa and Seager hit the market and the blew that opportunity.

Edit - I forgot to mention George Lombard as the other minor league SS prospect.

I think it’s apparent now. 319 games in and his numbers are as follows:

50 doubles, 11 triples, 33 homers, 120 RBI’s, 94 walks to 323 strikeouts and a .228/.288/.373 triple slash.

He had a .238 OBP in June, a .265 OBP in July, a .302 OBP in August, and a .212 OBP with a .177 average and 1 extra base hit in all of September & October.

He had 51 strikeouts to 12 walks over the last 51 games he played during the regular season. His approach and swing seem totally fukked up and he misses entirely on pitches deep in the zone nearly every plate appearance he makes. He doesn’t put the ball in the air, he doesn’t make good contact, he doesn’t hit the ball hard, and he doesn’t seem to have even a consistent approach. I tried to be optimistic but he seemed to get worse in 2024 than he was in 2023. I’d also look at Bo Bichette to see if the jays will trade him. I know it’s only 2 years but I didn’t see anything promising in Volpe’s game this past year, especially since his power numbers dropped sharp.

I was trying to post this graph from Baseball Savant Illustrator the other day but it just doesn't work on the coli.

Below is the percentage of pitches Volpe received by strike zone.

And here is Volpe's wOBA (not batting average) by strike zone. Keeping in mind that a league-average wOBA is roughly .320.

This is what baffles me.
It's crystal clear that pitchers are pounding the outside part of the plate against Volpe. And somehow he's never made the adjustment.
And it gets on my nerves when I hear about how this kid grew up a massive Jeter fan and the fukking solution to this kid's batting woes is to....bat like Derek Jeter.

Now let me be clear about something.
Yeah, just about every hitter is going to have good numbers on balls up in the zone. Middle of the plate and a little on the inside, Volpe does well on those. But he just doesn't see pitches there very often.

Probably every hitter gets attacked low and away. Take someone like Gunnar Henderson. He saw a ton of outside pitches. But he actually HIT those pitches.

I don’t know if he has or hasn’t spoken with Jeter about hitting, but he really needs to ask him for help if he hasn’t. The big issue for me is how much he strikes out and misses in general on pitches deep in the zone.
