You'll have to job hop because most likely. Most companies don't care enough about IT Security to even create an dedicated position for it.

The Feds are constantly looking for IT Security folks but you have the barrier of needing an security clearance. And they only want specialized experience for the most part. So if you don't have experience on the exact technologies they use forget about getting hired.
I do have a top secret, I'm hoping that opens the door a little

Ok I've expressed interest in this field for a career. A+ will be easy peasy judging from notes listings on what I need to know. I want to collect CCENT just cause I have more knowledge in that area to get my foot in the door. It will take more work but will having both entries be good? I know having certain ones aren't as good as others and being that these are entry certs would you guys recommend one, both, any others?

Eventually if I want to keep on working at it I'll take the network route so it only makes sense to me but rather get info in the real guys.

I graduate with my A.S. in Computer Science in may of 2013, I'm trying to get some certs until than so I can find a decent job when I graduate while i go part-time for my B.S. I see people disagreeing but is A+ pretty much the standard to not get your resume tossed? I'm in my late 20's so I don't really have time to find a Mc job while I also finish my B.S. I was thinking of trying to get my A+, and network +, before I graduate. Can I be stuck in helpdesk purgatory even with a B.S.? I think I'm gonna go into computer engineering though, I noticed Computer Science is more programming. I've always been more into the hardware aspect of computers

Yes...

99% of ur job offers right out of school will be helpdesk, unless u go the programming route. Then u might find a jr. developer/programmer position somewhere. No company is going to trust someone with zero experience to handle any type of role in a data center/noc. Helpdesk is pretty much ur only foot in the door. It's not that bad if ur young and no job experience. But once u get a few years under ur belt its time to start working on ur exit strategy.

side note: A+ is shyt....just about everybody gets it so it's pretty worthless now. I almost expect to see it on the average resume. Network+ is slightly more impressive, but imo I tend to notice candidates with MCTS/MCP/CCENT. That shows me that they are working towards some solid certs.

after a couple of interviews it seems that help desk is like 90% customer service...i went into a couple of interviews and most of the workers and supervisors didn't know shyt about computers. the supervisor that interviewed me didnt know any cisco or microsoft certs and some of the workers didnt know how to set up dual monitors:heh:

i feel like you can lie that you have your a+ to get interviews and just sell customer service to them to get the job.

Working in the I.T field is customer service rather it is a Network Analyst, Desktop Services, Help Desk,, System Analyst you can name it. When you get these interviews always make mention of having good customer service skills and communication.
