No. It's worth it, especially if you don't have a degree. I work helpdesk and to even get an interview you have to either have an A+ or an Associates' in something IT-related.

I think some of the dudes in this thread don't realize how hard it is in the current economy to get your foot in the door, you're not gonna start out as a Network Admin or DBA.

So I mean, an A+ obviously won't get you big bucks, but it'll help you land your first tech support/helpdesk/desktop support job.

... i said this before on sohh.. i will say it again...

fukk A+, get CCENT... study a+ if you want.. but the cert to start things up should be CCENT..

you will get the same helpdesk jobs.. however.. if they have entry jobs related to networking.. even if its opening the tickets for the techs.. it will give you a batter base for a better job... then get CCNA.. and go along the line of your employment... Voice, Data or security...

btw.. over here in canada we have 1 year certifications that teaches you networking only... STRONGLY suggested.

It went real smooth. He went over my resume he was more interested in my knowledge Active Directory because they are implementing the entire system in 10 months he said. They are getting rid of Novell which they are still using lol. Interview went past more than an hour. I believe I left a great impression. I definitely have to get my Certs though.

He bullshytting u....

We are hiring a Sr. Systems Engineer to take over AD because a couple of us are going exclusively to VDI. Every dude we interview puts AD experience/knowledge on his resume and we act like we are amazed every single time. When they start rambling off about their AD knowledge and certs we all get excited. But little does he know, 90% of the guys working here have AD knowledge/certs. We are not going to make some dude off the street a DA just because he says he knows AD or is a MCITP. The main thing we look for is experience and lots of it.

In ur case, they not gonna take a dude who was interviewing for helpdesk and put him on a Novell migration just because he has knowledge of AD.

Just trying to be realistic bruh.

If system/server admin is ur goal then u can take the route I took...

U have to start in helpdesk, there is almost no other way around it. Try working at a place with little structure and not alot of strict policies in place. Those are the types of places that allow u to cross train and shadow other people. If u go to a place with strict rules and policies then there is a chance u may never even see the Engineers/Admins.

After u do that for a bit, just try to get in as a Jr. Admin/Engineer. Ur already doing alot of the work/training, but u wanna make it legit in preparation for ur move up. Even if there isn't an official title change, just as long as ur boss recognizes u as that. Once u get that far, start getting some certs and u will pretty much know where to go from there.

There are a million ways to progress in IT, it's different for everybody. Getting in helpdesk is easy, getting out is hard.

Couple questions:
What year are you in school?
Do you have an idea of what you wanna wind up doing for the rest of your life?
Do you have any specific questions?
Does your school make CS highly Math intensive (meaning, you have calculus courses to take)?

Heads up on the new landscape of IT:

Recruiters are now scanning resumes for ANY US Citizen with a 7 year credit history, they act like they are hiring for you, but they are really trolling for references to get their visa or clearances to get to their goals at your expense.

If a person can run a credit check and verify your work history and IT credentials, they can assume your resume and use your hard work to get a better job themselves, without you even knowing. If you suck at IT, they can still assimilate in order to get their hustle going by using you as a proxy.

Be careful with online jobs and websites.

1. About to be in my 4th year . I switched to CS from bio at the beginning of my 3rd year though.

2. Not exactly sure yet, but so far I'm digging application development. I want to learn more about databases as well.

3. Just looking for any tips on things I should do while in school that will benefit me once I graduate.

4. Yes, my CS is fairly math intensive. I take up to calc 2, then I gotta take linear algebra, discrete math, and a couple of other stuff I think.

Normally Systems Analyst positions aren't very technical. You'll usually end up supporting the people doing the actual technical work.

This has been going on for years and they usually pops-up when the economy starts to falter. I'm also noticing tons of recruiting companies hiring Indians for their really big clients. Their American counterparts working for the same company usually don't have an clue this is going on. You would end up with American recruiter and their Indian counterpart both trying to place you for different jobs at the same time.

So you think I have a chance at it???????

This is the hospital I have been at for about 7 to 8 months as an intern. The desktop position that I had the interview for was filled but from what I heard they already had the position filled. Which is the reason why I say its all about who you know.
