What did you use to study? Any notes/tips?

  • Went through everything in the Objectives list ad nauseum, including the acronyms.
  • Professor Messer's course on youtube
  • Jason Dion's 501 course on Udemy (skip the practice exams. Tbh, watching both is overkill. Stick with Messer's video course and review Dion's notes that are included with the course. Throw out some of the protocols that are from the 401. You'll know them when you see them)
  • Also bought Professor Messer's practice exam's as a last minute prep

If I had to give advice, I'd say just go through the Objectives and make sure you understand every line item in there. The test was a combination of feeling like I was expected to simply "know my shyt", as well as using deductive reasoning. You'll get a lot of fluff in the questions, so get used to sifting through bullshyt questions to find the most logical answer sprinkled into one sentence.

When I say you should know the objectives, I'm speaking more on a general level. You don't have to be an "expert" at anything in there... but you should be able to identify the difference between the outputs from Netstat and NetBIOS when you see them. Know when you should be using Wireshark vs. Nessus to troubleshoot an issue laid out in a question. You should be able to read logs. Etc.

Finally stopped procrastinating and got my Sec+ last week. :banderas:

Any gov't contractors in here that can point me in the right direction? I live near one of the largest AFB's in the country and didn't see much on Indeed or USAJobs. Wondering if there's either hiring freezes or if I'm just looking in the wrong places.
You're screwed without a Clearance especially with Covid slowing down investigations.

Is that Google IT/ CompTIA dual credential worth it on coursera? Can you actually land an entry level job with that cert?

:patrice:

search for the job you want and look at what they are asking for

then find the teachings that match that or learn it yourself

if the cert is listed then fine

but if you do not know anything then the more you can learn the better

:wow:

What's the current schedule on your first shift/job?

I working remote for United Airlines right so doing a 2nd gig is too risky since they always have me on call for some shyt but I'd love the option.

I interviewed with a VR company that wanted me to work 12am to 9am but sometimes I end up working overnight for United. If you can pull that shyt off then :salute:my g.

Appreciate it breh.

It's just a matter of finding the right gig that's just straight shift work, no on-call,

Last week I was a serious contender for a system engineer position paying 120K, but it was day shift. If I was already deep into my daily routine at my current job I'd feel comfortable jumping at the opportunity, but I dont want to risk it

1. The current client i'm working with has one of the top 3 VDI engineering teams for VMware technology for any company; so much that VMware regularly makes changes based on their feedback from things they have implemented in production. Basically, in terms of my career path, I'll be massively ahead of the curve with the shyt ton of knowledge and hands-on experience I'll gain from this contract. The load of experience is worth 3 times what i'm currently paid. I aint sweating the 120K because the shyt i'm about to be doing will have me commanding $170K + a year when its all said and done. I'm just playing the long game. That's why I cant give up my current day job.

I aint really doing much of shyt in terms of night life and going out due to Covid so I figured why the hell not get a second job and just stack and stack and stack some more.

Hopefully I can land a role dealing with Linux. I need to put this RHCSA to good use

Bronx

but it all seems generic to me, calls from recruiters I take lightly vs getting an interview with the company

It’s been pretty dry for months now. One week it’ll ramp up and then everyone is gone again

Once Thanksgiving week comes up, I’m not sure what things are going to look like

that’s why I’m just focusing on my cert and will expect things to ramp up by January

For sure fam, you considered segwaying into some kind of DevOps or Cloud Engineering role??

Lots of Linux Engineers end up there.

Exactly!

That was the whole reason I got my RHCSA . I originally started off on the pure linux Engineer --->Devops path, but as fate would have it, I sort of just fell into this VMware stuff and I've been loving it just as much and its gettin me mad bread because of my experience with it

TBH I really havent tried nearly as hard enough to land a Linux role, Maybe I can find a second job doing Linux than springboard to a Devops role

Currently I'm already in a level 3 Cloud/Infrastructure engineer role for a firm that deals exclusively with providing cloud-based solutions and services. I'm just trying to soak up as much as I can between my this job and my homelabs.

I plan to stay in the cloud/virtualization/Linux side of things for the long term. I havent had a linux role yet but maybe its time to start pushing for that.

Cloud/Virtualization for day job

Linux- evening job - After that I'm shooting for Devops

@Rhyme n Tekniq this the kind of shyt I like to see black folks on. :wow:

This is the most important section in the whole forum and not nearly as active as it should be.

When we get our priorities straight we kill it effortlessly.

Congrats breh.

Appreciate it Breh.

I'm not even pressed about this section not being as active. It weeds out who'se serious about this shyt and who isnt. I dont want to deal with a bunch of bum asses who are too lazy to read through this thread and soak up game and derailing productive discussions with negativity

alot of posters are always dismissing us brehs like we :duck: and that's cool. I love it

But those who know...know

They can continue to waste time talkin bout pawgs and intersectionality politics while we stack this paper and achieve financial freedom.

My wife jokingly be like " How much money do you want to make:damn:"

I always tell her "All of it".:demonic:

That's my mentality.

I dont set upper limits for myself. Once I begin to top out in the six figure range. I want to already have the wheels in motion to be in the 7 figure tax bracket. And I'm not quitting my career when I do either. I aint turning down no paper, especially paper I can make while sitting in my boxers intermittently playing Playstation and laughing at shyt on here

I already feel semi retired because my work life balance is amazing. fukk ima give up my job for when I can work from anywhere?
