Attitude Era and UFC forced it into the more realistic/serious style.
Remember there were no tap outs before Ken Shamrock in WWE.
Jay-Z called WrestleMania bigger than the Super Bowl
It's still breathing
wrestling now >>>> most of the attitude era that dudes on here be crying for.
people just want to hit reset on life and go back to elementary/middle school.
it started in ECW. not the attitude era.
the difference is i believe that Gedo and Tony at least remember what they had for breakfast this morning.
Vince is done. he's dying days Al Davis, he has lost whatever he had and the longer they continue to let him run shyt the more detrimental it will be to wrestling. at least Al Davis didn't run the the equivalent of the NFL or American Football, he just ran a single team that's still in recovery 2 decades later.
According to Meltzer, wrestling has never been as popular or successful as it is today.
My only gripe is how serious everything went. Doink vs IRS Man had its charm. Hogan going heel. DX and Rock era had their levels of ridiculousness. shyt just kinda flattened out at some point and everything feels more serious than it needs to be.
There's nobody out there right now that has any hope of getting a crowd HOT like what you see on any youtube video of 80's to ruthless aggression era WWE, or WCW nitro at its peak. Nobody is coming with the right programs and storytelling that will resonate with people in this day and age. And maybe there's no way in this current age for wrestling to even be THE THING that people give a fukk about like that...
All that being said, wrestling is far from dead; because of the internet its current niche fanbase is millions of people all over the world so there's no chance of it disappearing.
Even if WWE gets sold to Disney and dies a slow death, pro wrestling will be around for centuries to come; in my opinion.
Now is it gonna be any good?
We are not on the right track for that, but we'll see what happens.
Seriousness is fine. Overwhelmingly boring is not
People hoping that Vince dies and/or sells the company better watch what they're asking for.
Those new buyers are not going to give a fukk about the previous history or wrestling's past no more than Vince currently does.
This... people really seem to think shyt would suddenly get better if the company just gets sold off but The man might make some bad booking decisions but it's bigger than that. If by chance, WWE gets sold to whoever the highest bidder is, the highest bidder is likely gonna be a company with no personal connection to it and likely far less dedicated to it. But folks wanna put Vince in hospice over Aleister Black
